Hey guys- I'm sure this will cause some controversy since some of you think the factory airbox is sufficient. Well, I cut it up. Pics aren't the best quality. First one is from inside the box, second is from the front. This only pulls air from the front of the vehicle, and still uses the factory "cold air inlet". I left part of the original tube inside to form a sort of ramp. I used a sonic crafter tool to make the cuts- super clean and easy. Not a lot of resonance from this, and I think I can feel a little bit of extra power? I also removed the filter that's attached to the top of the airbox cover. OK- Let me have it!

You did really nice work however.......the problem is not the quantity of air coming in,it's the quality of the air coming in the intake.

Air coming from under the hood is much warmer and turbulent then air in the fender,thus the CAI's came about! Back in the old muscle car days ,they had ram air intakes,functioning hood scoops and vents to bring in the cooler air.

It doesn't make as much difference in the winter but the summer time temps under the hood vs. in the fender can be extreme.The cooler and smoother the air the more dense it is and the more efficient your engine will run.

That's what I thought I would hear! I have done a mod like this on virtually every vehicle I've owned, and even in the summer it still seemed like I had a little more power. I'm very happy with this mod. It was free, it sounds good, it seems like I have a little more "butt horsepower". Not for everyone, I guess!

Did you leave the OEM air filter in place? Because that is your choke point. Unless you replaced that filter with something more free flowing, you haven't done anything except change where the air is coming from. As Harper7 pointed out, you've defeated the "cold air" portion of the intake, which will reduce performance. Combine that with the retention of the stock air filter and you've just cut up a bunch of expensive plastic for no good reason.

Mostly what you guys are offering are opinions, not facts. Yes I have thought about removing the resonators as well- maybe next? I removed the charcoal filter which has been talked about, at length, on this and other forums (Tundra, Tacoma, etc.). This is definitely a choke point. I will replace the factory air filter with a better flowing unit as soon as I can get one. I agree that it's very restrictive, especially with the pre-filter. Fact is, it definitely has improved performance to some tiny degree and I was just trying to contribute something to the forum. Like I said- I thought it would cause a stir. Some folks on here are very opinionated compared to other forums I've been on!:bluejump:
 
i see in your avatar pic, you are "off-roading". be careful with water holes or even deep puddles for that matter. looks like you would have better chance of hydrolocking.

It's probably better than spending $300+ on an overpriced TRD intake for a possible 7-10whp.

The deckplate mod on a 3rd gen is proven to gain some HP but while it is a negligible amount it's better than spending a wad of dough to get the same minor HP bump.
In the real world on a naturally aspirated motor you might notice a bit better throttle response but in a dragrace with a 4Runner with an uncut box the driver would still determine the winner.
 
That's what I was thinking. Now people will really be mad at me when I say the new TRD intake looks to me like an overpriced stock box minus the resonators. Sorry, been reading the thread- don't see a reason to spend that much for it... I'm sure it's nice though. Oh yeah I know my avatar isn't a real "off-road pic". I was just trying to see if ATRAC could get me up the embankment with 2 wheels almost off the ground. My buddy's TJ couldn't make it, but my family car(his words) went right up there. No serious offroading for me until this baby get's older!
 
how embarassing for the TJ, must have been open front and rear.

i wasn't knocking you btw, just wanted to give a head's up if you weren't aware of the hazard. hell, the JK's have issues with hydrolocking with the stock air boxes.
 
I'm sorry, I just dont understand how this engine could be short on airflow. The air box on the 4runner is about the same size as the stock one on my 2005 GTO and that's a 6.0L V-8 that makes 400hp. I find it hard to believe that any sort of "cold air, low restriction intake" could improve performance on this 4.0L V-6. Just my 2 cents...
 
All across the world there are Mechanical Engineers and Fluid Dynamicists slapping their collective heads and thinking "D'oh! why didn't I think of that?"
