DIY High Clearance OEM Bumper Mods?

Anyone cut their OEM bumper to allow for higher clearance/approach angle on the tire like they have on the 5th gen with the SSO kit?

Not sure if the fog light part on the bumper will allow for the same kind of clearance as the 5th gen bumpers.

I have no desire for a full metal bumper but I do like the options of the SSO Slimline bumper (and others like it).

let me see what I have..
Make sure if you do trim, that your rig is on LEVEL ground. LOL My cut is a little crocked, it really stands out to me lol

Since you kept the rear hitch, did trimming the rear bumper actually gain you anything in terms of clearance? I have a v8 hitch, so it kills my ground clearance... But also has protected my rear bumper from a lot of heartache.

I would totally trim my front bumper, but previous owner had already smacked it pretty bad on a parking pillar... I'm guessing that I would need to remove too much of the bumper to be worth it. Guess its an excuse to get a metal bumper!

Yes and no... I say yes, because most of the time, the tire is on the taller rock so coming down off a rock the tallest point of a rock is where the tire was and the bumper there follows the tire.
I say no, because sometimes not many I have hit the reciever hitch.

Overall, yes it is better Id say pretty much most of the time but I dont know where you're located or the type of wheeling you do. I will at some point get a real bumper with a swingout carrier, its 3rd on my list lol..

Curious as to how you trimmed them. What so you use to do the cutting? Just a box knife? That would be a real pain I think, since it's ABS plastic, and probably not very clean cutting either.

I used this, with the round blade. makes it SUPER easy, just make sure you tape where you want to cut and make sure its STRAIGHT, once its cute, NO going back LOL

Hey 04rnr, I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I really like the look of your bumper cuts. Think I'm going to to do the same with the straight across cuts front and back.

Do you have any details on your tire carrier? Looks like it's welded to your rear cross member and you retained the stock hitch. Looks awesome, and I'd really appreciate any info you can provide on how you built it.

You are correct, I dont have a welder so I didnt make it. any local welder could do this, simple, easy.
You can get the the spindle and latch online, I cant remember where I got mine just search tire carrier parts something like that.

I keep coming back to this thread for courage to get out the grinder and cut some more bumper off. Anyone else taken the plunge?
