DIY Laptop Holder?

Hi all,

Need a hand. I travel with a little netbook (dell mini 9) that I connect to an external hard drive that holds a bunch of movies. It is great for flying, and it was great for road tripping. The mini9 used to fit perfectly on the dash of my Jeep, but on a 4runner, there’s not enough space.

I’ve been looking around for a stereo console that can play movies off the hard drive (The Pioneer model pointed out in another thread looks awesome). However, until I can save up enough scratch I’d like to find a stop-gap. I’m thinking some kind of laptop stand would work really well.

I’ve seen the ones that people have that bolt onto the bottom of the passenger seat, but that is going to be a bit too intrusive for me as the trips that I would use the computer on would generally have someone in the passenger seat. So, I’m thinking there must be some way to fabricate one that will fit in a cupholder in the center console. Maybe just a pipe with a platform on top. But, I’m not quite sure.

Has anyone done anything like this? Any thoughts or recommendations? I’m picking up my 4runner in a few weeks and will be road-tripping it home… Ideally I’d love to have a solution by then that I can use!
