DIY oil changes and warranty

Hello all -
This is my first post even though I have been a member since July when I bought my 2009 SR5 V6 2WD. I am getting close to the 5K mileage mark and I am just wondering about the first oil change (looks pretty simple with this engine). This is my first new car ever and I just want to make sure that I don't void the warranty. Any thoughts about this?

I am not an expert, but I believe that you can service your own vehicle, or have it done by someone other than the dealer without voiding the warranty, provided it is done properly. The burden of proof would be on them to show to show the job was done incorrectly, and that it caused the problem you are claiming falls under the warranty if they decided not to honour your warranty. I don't know of a reference offhand, but I think this is part of the price fixing laws.

Just use a good oil and filter. Toyota cannot void your warranty because you DIY maintnance unless they can prove that the cause of the problem was directly related to improper service procedures. This was part of the Moss-Morrison Act, I think.

But one thing that Toyota is anal about is keeping records of maintnance. Follow the schedule listed in the "Maintnance Schedules" booklet that came with your truck. Sign your name and check off the service you preformed along with the mileage and date. That way you dont have to go by memory.

They can't require you to come in and do service to
maintain a warranty under the Magnuson Moss Act:

No warrantor of a consumer product may
condition his written or implied warranty
of such product on the consumer's using,
in connection with such product, any
article or service (other than article
or service provided without charge under
the terms of the warranty) which is
identified by brand, trade, or corporate
name; except that the prohibition of this
subsection may be waived by the Commission if--

(1) the warrantor satisfies the Commission
that the warranted product will function
properly only if the article or service so
identified is used in connection with the
warranted product, and
(2) the Commission finds that such a waiver
is in the publicinterest.

I thought your 1st oil change should be FREE when you purchase your car at a Toyota dealer.
