Pepboys? Are you nuts? I wouldnt let those guys change my oil.
I get free oil changes from the stealer every 5k. otherwise i do it myself. especially tire rotations 15-30 min tops maybe longer in the nice balmy single digits were having lately. oh wait its 35 degrees today i'm goin to the dairy queen for a ice cream.

It really depends on what it is. Little stuff like oil changes, filter change, cabin filter change, etc... I do at home. For the other major stuff I bring it to the dealership. One thing I will not do is to let the dealership supply the fluids. I purchase all my fluids ahead of time.

I do my own oil changes, tire rotations and filter replacements. Never had to take the 4R in for any warrenty work yet, even though she's got 31K on her.
I got free oil changes and other scheduled maintenance from the dealer for the first 24K when I bought it, but after seeing how badly they cross threaded the bolts on the skid plate when I took it in for the first oil change, I never took it back to them for anything else. Luckily, it's never needed anything other than basic stuff so far and I can do all of that myself.
She's due for a 30K diff and trans fluid change and I'm wondering about what I should do. I'm very unhappy with the local dealership and don't want to just go to the local AAMCO dealership because I don't think they'd be be much better. Anyone have any better suggestions?

I do my own oil & filter changes - and will replace air cleaners, in-cabin air filters, etc., etc. myself. I generally avoid using the dealer for anything other than warranty work or something else that I might not trust to an 'independent' place. I can do an oil change with Mobil-1 synthetic for less than a shop charges for doing it with mineral oil.
Since I leased my 4Runner for 36 months, I probably won't need anything other than basic fluid & filter changes during my tenure with this truck. Oh, and I do indeed keep all of my receipts!
For my 6,000-mile tire rotations, I will use Wal-Mart. They only charge $6 for a front-to-rear swap; hard to touch that anywhere else and you don't need an appointment.
I used the stealership for my first oil change (which was complimentary), but have done it myself since then. I'll also use the dealer for the annual state inspections - also gratis for those of us who purchased or leased our vehicles there.
Our Toyota dealership has a good service department, but they're quite expensive (in comparision to DIY or places such as Midas, Meineke, All-Tune, etc., etc.) for routine maintenance or repairs. Also, getting an appointment during their available hours is a major pain in the arse if you are like me and happen to work for a living. They are open Saturdays though, which helps a bit.
Whether or not I keep this vehicle after the lease, it is going to run well for a long time after I am through with it.

Even then I go over the vehicle with a fine tooth comb after the work was done and find all the mistakes they make, to make them 'get it right'.
I trust some greasemonkey under a shade tree (whose livelihood lives and dies by word of mouth) before I would a dealership.

I'm leery of touching the transmission -- last time I did one, I screwed it up and had to have it rebuilt. Just don't want a repeat performance.

i got my brothers shop were i did a tune up at. I did the work with the help of him but we did not do it at home so i say both cause how many people have lifts and stuff like that.
