Do I need 4WD?

I'm from Louisiana and I'm just planning to buy it for my son to drive to school. He just going to drive it on the road. I just got the following quote from my dealer White Limited RWD with NAV, remote start,carpet, and wheel lock for $38,896.53 before tax with the MSRP of $41,079.00. The dealer told me that the price i'm getting is $500 over invoice and he showed me the dealer invoice on his computer. Thats only $2200 off considering the invoice is $3400 under MSRP according to the internet. Anybody think I can do better around here? I don't mind driving...thanks

2wd is very common down south. It will do just fine.
Some points on 4wd:
-Better in the rain
-Some say more stable on the highway when windy
-Better resale value
-Its there if you need it

If you have the cash to spend I would do the 4wd. My guess is if you are buying a $40k for your son for college then you have a few extra $$$ lying around
The only issue I see here..... if you give a college student a $40k 4wd offroad machine he WILL take it offroad (even if he says he will not). If it is only 2wd he will be less likely (might still try it) to take it offroad. I know they are designed to take most of it, but I think we all know what we did to our cars/suvs in college. I know what I did to my 4wd that i would have NEVER done if it was 2wd. Just some thoughts. Again, it will help in resale as stated before.

Shouldn't 4wd have a better resale value if it cost more from the factory?
From what you listed I would say no, you don't need it. Although it can never hurt to have it...well maybe the wallet.

Not me, Im a junior in college and got my 4R as a christmas present freshman year....i dont abuse it.

Why taunt me then? But yes, many kids dont appreciate cars, abuse them etc etc.
Is the 4WD full time for the limited only right? Can it be switch to RWD? I'm about to make an offer of $40k plus tax for a White Limited 4WD with NAV,remote start, carpet, exhaust tip, and cargo rack and net. I think the MSRP should be around $43k on that. Is that a good price?

i'm a recent university graduate and i have a trail on order which should arrive next week. i plan on taking my 4runner off roading but i dont consider that abuse. i see it as using and enjoying the car to its fullest. why bother getting something like a 4runner if it isnt gonna get dirty once in a while?
shoulda taken the money and gotten yourself a bmw or something then, i'm sure the girls at college would have been much more impressed than rolling in a 4runner. the 4runners that never hit anything but the pavement are what allow people to give them nick names like "mall crawlers" when they're much more capable than that.
to the OP. i say get him the 4wd, consider it an investment and piece of mind. if he needs the 4wd it'll be there, maybe he'll keep on driving the 4runner to a point where he decides to take it off the beaten path one day to somewhere new.
also, why does he need a limited? he should be glad that his dad's willing to buy him a car, a 4runner at that, and take whatever he gets with one big ass smile. personally, if i were in your position i'd buy him the SR5 with the upgrade package. it'll have leather, a moon roof and alot of other stuff. the SR5 will be part time 4wd and should be easier on the wallet and just as capable in getting your son to and from college.

Buy him the 4WD, if you can afford it.It is nicer and safer and only a couple of thousand more and under warranty. He'll love it!
If it was my dad and he could have afforded it. I DEFINITELY would have wanted the 4WD no matter what MY age was.

It's full time 4WD. It cannot be in 2WD (RWD) mode.
The SR5 and Trail Edition with part time 4WD, can be in 2WD (RWD) mode.

I would either get a Limited with 4WD or an SR5 with part-time 4WD. You can probably get an SR5 with leather in your area and save a little on price as well as fuel. However, you would lose Nav.
I think the point eskimochaos was making is that it will impact resale value. I would think it would hurt in a trade as well. What dealer wants to have a 2WD sitting on their lot - at least in Pittsburgh that wouldn't be likely.
Also, you have to think beyond where you live now. Are you always going to be in LA? What if your son gets a job up north once he's done with school? Or, are there any beaches nearby which allow you to drive on the sand? Just some thoughts to consider.

When I purchase mine there was another Silver v8 4wd right next to it for about 2k more . I considered the fact of the gas prices going crazy back then and that I dont go offroad. This was going to be my daily driver. Last winter when I almost got stuck I started wondering for a while if I should have gotten the 4wd. Then after I found this site I started wishing If I could go back in time and purchase the 4wd. I love my 2wd and never had a problem with it. But If I get another truck definitely is going to be 4wd. U never know when you gonna need it!...

It will INCREASE resale value especially when someone in the rustbelt is looking for a 4WD used t4r w/o rust.
