Do i need tow package

Hi All,
I am new to this forum and considering purchasing a 2006 4Runner. The primary usecase is daily driver but a few times a year (about 4 to 6) I would need it to tow my car (3000lbs + 2200lbs trailer) to the track (approx 150miles). Its mostly in Texas and so no hills or steep roads.
The question I have is, will a V8 4runner be sufficient. Will it need to have to tow package?

Most of the v8 trucks have the better hitch than the v6. If the trailer has electric brakes you should look at a brake controller. Otherwise just take your time, leave ample braking space and enjoy the ride.

You should already have a hitch and electrical plugin to the left of the hitch.

i believe the tow capacity is around 7k so you should be good.. and
you would def need a tow package.
 
This /\ and a electric brake controller, unless the car hauler has a hydraulic brake system, then you won't need one.
 
Thank you all for your reply. This means that the Tow Hitch should be able to handle about 6000lbs.
It is very hard to find a V8 with a tow package.
If it does not have the tow package, I should be able to add the brake controller, transmission coolers and other components after the fact based on my need. What does it cost? Are the Toyota dealers the best folks to approach?

A 4th Gen V8 4Runner came factory with tow package and transmission cooler. The only thing you would have to purchase is a brake controller and wire it up for the electric brakes on the trailer. Just take it to any local trailer place like Uhaul and they can wire it up for you.

On the brake controller, if you decide to buy one, under your dash(driver side kick panel) there is a connector to plug in. This connector has 4 wires to connect to the controllers wires. If you don't have the connector ( mine came in the glove box with the vehicle) you will probably have to go to the dealer for one.

This connector makes it plug and play, shops will charge you for getting one.

It is pretty easy to do it your self, if you wish to I can take a picture of where it plugs into. Expect to pay around $200 for a good one. This is why you do it your self.
