do toyota oem radios have locking codes?

my 06 has the dredded #3 error code so im looking at a cd radio from ebay but a friend said all chevy oem radios have lock codes if its unplugged or loses power, is this true for toyota too?

if so how do i go about getting an oem replacement or should i just try to see if its possible to swap out just the cd portion of my existing radio from another oem radio

PS - if it matters i have the upgraded JBL sound system in mine and it says JBL on the radio

I’ve swapped the headunit in my 07 several times - 3 different Toyota units altogether and never needed to unlock any of them. FWIW, mine is a non-JBL.

I have an OEM 6-disc changer headunit, and a Scion Bluetooth touchscreen that I’m not using if you’re interested.

i never even knew chevy did this, it seems very stupid even though i understand the idea was to reduce theft, but who would steal oem radios lol

i just bought an 04 chevy but it looks like im stuck with the crappy base radio unit or buy aftermarket for that one because im not going to a dealer to get a radio unlocked

hell now that i am thinking about it, i might just get another JBL toyota cd radio and put that in my chevy because i dont need touch screen with navigation and rear view camera and that seems to be all they sell today in aftermarkets lol

Physically it may fit, but I’m certain the electrical fixtures would be different on a Chevy. You’d probably have better luck going aftermarket.

im talking about changing radios in a chevy truck and my 4runner at the same time, not from chevy to toyota or vise-versa

it just blew my mind finding out chevy radios need unlock codes and i thought maybe toyota might have that same setup so i came to ask about it, im very glad to learn 4r dont have that stupid lock stuff

in the 4runner i have a jbl unit im replacing with a regular standard brand oem radio. i assume its just plug and go but i expect that maybe it puts out less watts then the jbl

Double check with whatever head unit you buy, just make sure it'll be compatible with JBL. I have a NON JBL head unit I replaced with a Toyota 86 / FRS. I just needed to buy adaptors but basically plug and play.

I have the OEM 6 CD changer if you're interested, I have a NON JBL system in the car and I don't know if they are compatible. You're welcome to have it for $45 including shipping or less depending on shipping. I'll weight the box when I get home, I'm not looking to make big bucks, don't mind helping out and my OEM head unit will just sit in the basement. message me if you're interested.

I am guessing that it should be Plug and play - reference to the wires plug in to the head unit. BUT do research a bit about JBL. When researching what head unit I should replace mine with, I recall JBL people have some "road bumps" when they replaced head units. I don't know what difficulties as I do not have an JBL system.

But there should not be any codes on these toyota head units. just compatibility with JBL difficulties. Sorry I can't be more help.

I'm not sure but I don't think that unit is going to work with your JBL wiring since I think the JBL radio has to sent power to the amp and I don't think that unit is setup for that, whether the CD portion can be removed and installed in yours I don't know.

hmm, that sounds like bad news then, i might have to send it back and buy the jbl one but those ones are pricey. so much for saving a few dollars

well i had time to pull it apart today

regular cd radio has 2 plugs but the jbl has 3 plugs and the big plug has extra pins and a different shape so its not even close

i managed to get my cd back out of it but after putting it back together its showing it has 6 cds in it but its empty and it wont try to eject any or reset the trays. i did see a video where if you apply 5 volts to the right pins it makes the trays reset but i dont have a 5 volt transformer or any idea what pins to apply juice to if i did so i say its pretty much beyond help.

im getting ready to sell it so let the new owner decide if they want to replace it with another jbl for around $50 on ebay or go aftermarket

Me? I have the original 2008 Head Unit somewhere in the house if that is what your after. I believe I replaced mine from a 2021 Toyota 86.
