Does anybody wish their abs kicked in less intrusively?

I know there have been many situations where my abs has significantly increaced my stopping distances. These include driving on snow, mud, wet concrete. Was wondering if anybody has heard of possibly using newer abs software or a reprogram or something. It just seems like the abs in my '96 is very representative of early abs equipped vehicles; good for dry pavement but a little to intrusive for just about anything else! Any help is appreciated, thanks.
