does front drive shaft rotate when not in 4wd?

Hey guys.. I am having bird chirps from my driveshaft.. It has gotten better after I greased the u joints but the noise comes and goes.

I dont want or have time to replace all of them, and am trying to pin point which DS to take off..

It makes noise when in drive (not in 4wd).. Id like to know if the front DS spins (rotate) when 4wd is not engaged. If it does not it has to be the ujoints in the rear. If it does I will pull the front DS to inspect..

Front driveshaft does not rotate in 2wd. Since these trucks are rwd trucks, when in 2wd, your rear driveshaft spins putting power to your rear tires. When you put it in 4wd, it puts power to your front 2 tires as well, hence 4wd.

Front drive-shaft does not spin in 2wd assuming your ADD (automatic disconnect differential) is working correctly.

Ok thanks.. I guess the noise is from my rear DS hopefully its not the double cardin. Because it sounds like its from the middle of the truck..

My last jeep Wrangler spins when its in rwd/2wd.

My 97 had a similar noise at certain speeds. Doing the grease fittings didn't help so I sprayed/soaked the whole thing with WD-40 and it solved it. I guess the liquid was able to penetrate somewhere the grease couldn't.
