does my 4runner have differential slip?

newbie here, do all 4runners come with diff. slip? how can i tell if i have it or not? is it a plus or negitive? i have a 1999 4runner sr5

No 4runners came with limited slip differentials if that's what you're asking. Open diffs were standard and rear elockers were an option on 4runners until '01. Elockers are a big plus because you can choose to run the rear diff fully open or fully locked at the flick of a switch.

If you have an elocker you would have a switch on your dash that says "RR Diff Lock". If not, you have open diffs front and rear.

So you can't lock the front? Honda Pilot has a switch on the dash to lock all four wheels.

That is a center diff lock you are thinking about, the 01 and 02's have that, the 96-00's had no center diff lock and had the option of a rear locker which forces the 2 rear wheels to have power equally sent to them so that if one wheel is slipping the other one can still has traction and push you out of a mess. The 01's and 02's did not have the option to lock the rear diff. There was no stock option for that feature on the front axle.
 
To clarify what I think John Meant is that the 96-00 were a Part time 4wd system and by that alone means there is no center diff. When put into either 4Hi or 4Lo the front and rear driveshaft are locked together by gears in the Transfer case.

In the Multi-mode transfer cases that operate as an AWD you have a center diff that allows for computer controlled power distribution to front or rear. To engage true 4wd you need to have a Center diff lock. This then causes the transfer case to operate like the earlier years by locking the front and rear drive shafts giving equal power to both axles.
 
So what's the difference between hitting the AWD button on the t-case shifter and then pulling the lever down to H4L? I guess this only applies to '99 and '00 Limiteds.

your is the multi mode like mine, the push button is awd and moving the t-case shifter is like the locking center diff described above. (even though there is no real center diff lock, it's just the t-case doing it's thang)



correct me if i'm wrong on that.
 
Pressing the awd button takes you from 2wd to awd. (center diff is now activated, but not locked)
Shifting the transfer lever takes you from awd to 4wd OR 2wd to 4wd. (center diff is now locked)

AWD means any of the four wheels can receive engine power, and the power ratio from front to rear is infinitely variable.
4WD means any of the four wheels can receive engine power, but the power is split and locked at 50/50 front to rear.

If you do not have awd capabilty, you not have a center diff.

In my 99 limited, I have the locking rear diff, but to my understanding, when you pull the 4WD lever down to 4H(L) or 4L (L), the (L) stands for locked. Does this mean that in either of these settings, the rear diff is locked regardless of the switch to the left of my steering wheel? Or do I have have to press the button and pull the lever down to 4L (L) to really lock things up.

Also, I read in the manual that you want to keep your speed very low when the rear diff is locked. How fast is too fast when in this setting?

For future reference, you can tell whether or not any car has an open diff or not by jacking the drive wheels off the ground and spinning one of them. If the wheel on the other side spins in the opposite direction as you spin one of them, its an open differential.

in 4hL you locked 50/50 front to back but not side to side, the rear diff lock also locks from side to side so in 4l(l) with diff locked you have a 50/50 power split from front to rear and the rear axel has 50/50 to each side.

so you can take this to mean that front with still act like awd but side to side and not front to back, if this makes any sense.

simplest way of putting it the transfer case and center diff lock sends power from front to back and lockers send power side to side, so even in with a center locking diff the power ratio is bouncing back and forth from left to right but staying 50/50 from front to back.

people drive thier truck freeway speeds with spools and welded dffs all the time, but i don't condone or recommend that at all, i say you have no business running your lockers above 15 mph or so as the only reason to ever use it is trying to climb over an obstacle or get unstuck.

yeah i suck i know, but hopefully some of this makes some sense.

4H(L) = 4wd, high range, locked center diff
4L(L) = 4wd, low range, locked center diff

This has nothing to do with the rear diff locker. That can only be locked using the switch near the steering column.

Thats what i meant, it was a rushed answer.
 
you sure theres no limited slip in these things?, have a 99 supercharged auto tranny and when i lookin at it before i bought it, i was screwin around in the driveway and did a powerbrake without meaning to drivers side kicked in on the spin less than a rotation after the passenger side started spinning

They didn't come with it. Doesn't mean someone didn't put one in there.
 
hmmm, i mean the classic defintion of a open diff is that the drivers side never gets power unless in reverse, correct?

Open differential means that all the power goes to the wheel with the least traction . If you go over a wet spot and a tire breaks loose all the power go to that tire and keeps it spinning and the other tire will get no power to spin.

in 4wheel this also applies to the front axle. since the engine power is spit 50/50 each axle control there own 50% of the power.
