Does Rear Locking differential Exist on '02 Sport?

I for one say thank you.....

We are on a "Search" for a 4-Runner to "replace" our Camry and ALL of these threads help....With the addition of "Grand kids" plus the dog....more room is needed and jumping to a large LC will not work....

Now to "Find" one with the options of the XLE plus the 4x4 prowness of my tacoma.plus priced right......Tall order BUT it can be done.....

2WD = power to the rear wheels

01-02 AWD aka multimode = both front and rear differentials are getting variable power

4WD with Center Diff Locked (01-02) and 4WD for 2000 and down = 50/50 split to front and rear differential.

Locker on rear axle = 50/50 split of power for each tire on the rear axle only.

TRACtion control on 01+ only applies brakes to the wheel spinning faster than the other wheels

That's comparing apples and oranges. The center diff is great for hazardous/slippery on road conditions, and the rear locker is superior for off road. Having both would be ideal.

thanks, i am more concerned about off road and sandy beaches so thats good i am getting the one with the rr locker.

Not that I disagree with Brian as a rear locker is superior off road, I wouldn't be so quick to use in on sand as you will dig yourself a grave. Just a constant speed without fast accelerations and 4hi should be all you need for sure. Seen it a million times on the beach.

Very good point, I wasn't thinking about the sand particualrly. Regular 4x4 will sometimes be better on some terrain (like sand) than having the rear locked too. On a side note, a center diff will not do much for you in sand either. Nice wide tires are your best friend in those kind of conditions because they will let you "float" on top a little more.
