Does someone know what's this for?

Can't figure it out.

Please see below "THING / plastic box" (see pic #1) which according to my searchs doesn't exist. Instead of this part, all charts / manuals / parts sites, display a plastic hose where this THING is placed (see pic #2 - part # 10).

Any ideas?

Is it some kind of sensor?

Looks like a resonator for the intake tract... all it does is quiet some of the noise you get when you hit the gas pedal.

Had to temporarily repair it when my fan broke into pieces (which turned into bullets that hit several parts of the engine). http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4687

Thinking in replacing it with a regular hose as displayed in the above parts detail.

Do you think this might change other than noise?
