Does the 03+ 4.7L really have weaker internals

I've read this several times, usually always seem to be a Toyota Tech who has seen V8 4Runners with blown engines, weaker connecting rods.

I've heard several different points as to why the SC have been put on hold, Im still confused and the guys at Toyota don't seem much smarter then trained chimps, take away the computer and they be lost.

I probably would have the TRD SC but my local dealers wanted like 8000 dollars for it parts and labor, I know several GX470 guys have them on clublexus, noone ever said their engine blew up and Biff has 1 of yotatech and he's still going strong, whats the real deal.

Im debating on putting the SOS ProCharger on, I've heard good and bad about them:)

and if they did weaken the internals was it just the 4Runner, what about all the other trucks with the 4.7

I didn't think the engine changed much in '03. 2005 is the first change in the engine's internals (with the addition of VVTi) since introduced in 1998 Land Cruiser.

Now, in 2003, 4.7L V8 engines got the new 5-speed automatic transmission (previously, this engine was mated to 4-speed auto), along with other less significant upgrades. Could it be that TRD (or whoever) is doing research on the new tranny's reliability/durability with supercharger application?? That may explain the delay. TRD has not canceled the whole project (a good thing)...they are just putting it on "hold."

Correct me if i am wrong, but i do not think that the Tundra got the new 5-speed tranny in' 03. I think that only the Land Cruiser/LX and 4runner/GX got the new 5-speed auto tranny.

Remember, with increased power comes increased stress on powertrain. It's not just the engine that's affected...you have to consider the transmission's internals too. For example, the MB AMG cars can pump out even more power with their supercharger. However, because the 5-speed auto tranny can only withstand up to about 600 or so ft-lbs of torque, MB AMG had to limit the S/C's or Turbo's output (AMG or V12 BiTurbo).

All speculation on my part...but if 2003-04 are the years that TRD has held the S/C application, then i think that the auto tranny was the BIG change, not the engine.

Of course, i doubt that TRD will allow a S/C to be on the '05 VVTi V8 engine because of higher compression ratio and VVTi mechanism.

I have to agree with thai has I don't think the motor itself changed one bit. It's the same ol motor from back in 98 so that can't be the factor.

I suspect the tranny is the biggest factor that is causing long term problems but then again I haven't seen or heard of any sc'd 4th gens that bit the dirt personally except for those mentioned here (odd). :dunno:
