Does the 4th Gen look better with a Spoiler?

I like the way it looks and more than anything it's functionality.
On my trip back from Richmond, Va at 70-75 in the rain this weekend I didn't really need to use the rear wiper, the window was clean and practically water free (as compared to a Jeep I used to own).
Come to think of it, this weekend was the first time I ever used the rear wiper...

I like the roof spoiler, but I do think it looks cleaner without one.
But, without a spoiler it does also look NAKED, I guess I'm used to it.
I guess I can go either way, with or without it I don't mind.

Spolier ugly and in the way
If you are putting stuff on top, loose the spoiler.
I bought a 05 limited T4R without the spoiler because I thought it would get in the way when I am loading and unloading my canoe. I only say that because the Sequoia spoiler did. Additionally, I think I would have to scoot my big fat skis forward. And my cargo basket that I use for camping that would hit.

But when you really stop to think about it, what is a spoiler doing on an SUV anyway?
It's almost like putting a racing stripe on a 4-cylinder vehicle. It just doesn't make sense.

I think we need to understand there's differences in having an SUV for looks and for functionality. For one thing, an SUV is not a sports car, and I agree it would be silly to put racing stripes on it, or even some aero-dynamic spoiler for a fast racing car look.
As I had discussed in my posting of 12-11-06, the spoiler on the 4th generation T4R was designed not just mainly for looks, but for minimizing dust built-up on the tailgate when traveling over unpaved dirt roads. I installed a spoiler on my 2004 4Runner mainly for that purpose. It seems the spoiler is effective in reducing dust built-up on the tailgate when traveling on dirt roads.
I purchased my SR5 4WD for traveling over miles of rugged dirt roads in Baja to visit and flyfish the miles of wilderness beaches along the Pacific and Sea of Cortez. I've driven my T4R over beaches of soft sand, cobbles and boulders, and rugged dirt roads that many SUVs would likely not handle. So far, never got stuck and need the use of my High-lift jack or recovery strap.
I bought an SUV in the 4Runner with 4WD for outdoor camping, fishing and offroad use, and although it has great looks, I bought it because of dependability and functionality, and installing a spoiler helps keep things clean and less dusty when offroading.
If looks is the main thing, then it's rather subjective of having or not having a spoiler; either way is a personal choice and is fine. But if it's more for functionality, there's a really good reason for having a spoiler if one wants to justify of having one.
Hope this clarify and put things in perspective re spoiler on T4Rs.

I think the vehicle looks much more streamlined and modern without it. Spoilers are soooooooo 80's.
I do enjoy how it keeps the back window cleaner, but I've been living oh...16 years without a spoiler for my rear windshield on other vehicles and I am pretty sure I could definitely do without this one.
In fact, I'm thinking about hawking it on eBay.

It is not near redline and the fuel ecomomy drops to about 18mpg - she sure seems to like it. I've only done about 1200 miles at those speeds and have not had any problems.

yeah, I figured Josh would be the first to respond to that comment, seeing as he hates 4Runners as soccer mom vehicles..... still, the spoiler makes it look like an oversized shopping cart.... just my opinion. Guess I'd rather be NAKED than all dressed up pretty. As for the clean back window factor....I'm just not afraid to get a little dirt on my ride. :biggrin2:
