Does the ECU talk to Entune now?

I've started getting "Maintenance Reminder" messages on my Entune touchscreen. I am due for service, but this is the first instance where the messages have come to Entune rather than my instrument cluster.

I thought the Entune stack was isolated from the ECU, and therefore immune to remote hijackers (unlike Chrysler vehicles).

I'm sure the messages are not being mediated by my phone since the touchscreen messages appear even when my phone is off.

Did my dealer install some functionality at my last service visit?

That's interesting because my Entune (2015) has a menu for maintenance things but it's a user set type reminder thing. That being said I believe that you can set a reminder at a certain mileage which means it must be talking to the ECU to get the current mileage number, I'm not certain about this, I'll give it a look tomorrow

I had the same message show up on my screen when in my 2016 LE hit 6 months olds(to the day). I thought it might of been the dealer that programmed the maintenance message.

My wife's 2016 LE just turned 5000 miles last week, the only maintenance notification is on the instrument cluster.

I would imagine that it does. Your unable to program a new navigation destination when the truck is moving which means there is a road speed signal fed to the unit from the ABS/DSC unit. I don't see a reason the ECU/DME wouldn't have a connection as well.

It is user set. Someone, most likely your dealer set it. I set mine as sometimes my wife won't track mileage and it pops up and forces you to ok or cancel the reminders.

The issue with Chrysler's set-up if I recall was that they gave the headunit all the access it wanted to the ECM and thus allowed it to be "overtaken" when using a bluetooth connection (which is just silly to give anything that much control via Bluetooth or OnStar). Though to be fair most of the "hacking" done to vehicles at the moment was via OBDII access (i.e. being physically plugged into the OBDII port) which at that point is just silly since you're already in the vehicle and using a valid key to start it; so "hacking" it is just for shits and giggles. Though Toyota has taken this into consideration and in the new 4th Gen Prius it has basically a firewall module on the network for that purpose, which I imagine will be rolled out on newer vehicles in the near future as they update vehicle generations.

All that being said, that's a user enabled maintenance reminder most newer Entune units support. Most likely someone at the dealer or shop you take it to was trying to be nice and set it all up for you so you new exactly when your next oil change, tire rotation, ect. were due. Not something most people use.

But I don't think Entune displays MPG. The instrument cluster --which does talk to the ECU -- displays MPG.

I don't have any Entune or Toyota apps enabled on the touchscreen or my phone. If it is a new Entune feature, it's not visible to me. And if it was something visible only to the dealer and date-activated, it would have started started giving me notifications back in Feb. when my dealer's windshield sticker says was time for my next scheduled mainenance.

BTW, in the photo of the Entune message, one option is "Do Not Tell Me Again." That option doesn't work.

It's user enabled. You can turn it off and not use the feature. Someone turned it on. It may have been set for more than 5000 miles or a later date, who know. In the end...it is not dictated by the ecu nor is it part of etune app on your phone. If you don't want to use the feature, go to your apps, go to maintenance and turn them off.

[MENTION=140851]Vinsil[/MENTION] Got it! You're right on target. It's in the apps on the Entune touchscreen under Maintenance, and is user-configurable to either date or mileage. [MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION] was right that someone must have programmed it at my last service. Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I've been getting this message fo a month now. All new cars have the radio hooked into the ecu. Replacing a head unit now requires a separate module you have to install to trick the computer into thinking the stock radio is still installed otherwise you'll get a check engine light.

It depends on the Entune headunit and the vehicle. The newer vehicles are integrating it more into the combination meter itself. The older units sorta did both depending on the vehicle and headunit.

But basically the headunit is on the CAN/Multiplex network where it can poll the combination meter and ECU for specific information it may need. As I said before though, Toyota doesn't give the Headunit much authority on the databus last I checked though.
