Does the MAF come apart???

So I spent some time trying to figure out my horrible MPG issues today to no avail. I took a break and was poking around T4R and came across a thread about cleaning the MAF. I've already done that but in this thread Durk posted a pic and the MAF was actually apart.

Here is mine and this is how it was was I sprayed it out with CRC MAF Cleaner.

If it does come apart, how do you disassemble it? I don't want to break it but if I can take it apart to clean it better I will.

I know yours is a 97, so it might be different, but my 99 has a small square plate with two screws on opposite corners that pulls out of the intake tubing. My 03 Tacoma is the same. Attached to that small square plate at a perpendicular angle is a small sensor in a housing that you can spray. I'll see if I can find a pic-
 
no tommy it doesn't. if you want to get at the element, you have to stick the cue tip way down in there GENTLY! carefully swab back and forth with a little maf cleaner on the cue tip and you're done. just make sure you drain the excess cleaner out of the element housing.

Thanks guys. I just sprayed it a few times again and I have it sitting upside down with a little MAF Cleaner soaking in the element right now. I'll let it sit for a few, drain it, give it another spray out and then let it dry out for a while. I concentrated on the wider "air tube" part of it when I cleaned it before.

Fingers crossed guys, this 15 MPG sh*t (all stock) is killing me.

I used non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner to clean mine, shot directly at the diodes inside the MAF. At first I shined a light down it to see what I was looking to hit and saw to vertical brown blobs. After blasting each diode individually I looked again with a light and saw two shiney flat metal pilars that looked like they could actually sense something. Ive never used specific MAF cleaner and dont know how it dries but I can vouche for the brake parts cleaner and it was money.

On a side note, after cleaning mine (the new MAF version) I cleaned a co-workers whose looked like yours. The diodes were not as accessable as mine but was still simple enough to clean effectively.
 
No because I kept reading warnings about not touching the contacts. I actually soaked it for about 30 minutes though, it looks spotless. It's a lot cleaner than it was before. I feel like an idiot for just cleaning the plastic before.

Have you tried different brands/grades of gas? My 4runner loves Sunoco gas, loathes BP, and everything else is in between.

Fuel filter changed? Have you run a can of BG 44k in the tank or the like?

Fuel filter was changed a few months ago when I did the plugs, wires, etc. I don't really frequent one gas station over another, I just stop wherever has the shortest line when I need gas. I Seafoamed it right before doing plugs and wires and all. I dumped a can in the gas tank, half a can in the crank case and the other half in through the PVC line. I haven't tried BG 44 but I'm willing to if you think it's worth it. Will it do any damage to the plugs or O2 sensor?
 
No damage.

Pour the BG 44k in the tank and run it through two fill ups, then change the oil for good measure. I actually had to change my fuel filter after using it.

Brakes dragging (drums)? Just throwing out ideas here.
