Does the screen by the air filter come out??

I am in the process of changing my plugs and I noticed a screen with what looks like filter material on it located next to the engine side. (It is in the housing next to the engine after you remove the outer air filter housing and is the same shape as the air filter.) I tried to remove it to clean but it seems to be moulded into the housing.
Does anyone here remove it when changing the air filter to clean or is it none removeable?

It can be removed by drilling out the (plastic?) rivets holding it in if I recall. Those that have removed it have left it off since it supposedly allows the engine to wind up a little more quickly. But since I removed my stock intake and installed the TRD, I can't go out and look. You'd be surprised how much that post-filter and the torturous route the air has to take thru the rest of the stock assembly robs performance.

Well. You can remove it but you brake it to remove it. I took mine out before I switched to a CAI. But you dont need it. Many people on here remove it. I searched for a second (not too extensively) for a write-up on it but couldn't locate it. Removed, you'll notice a small difference in your throttle response.

I removed mine and put a stock style K&N filter in it. Gas mileage went up a few tenths and the throttle response is better.

Not really a big difference.

Thanks for the responses - I took it out today when I changed the plugs. Not much to it, I just took a Stanley knife with a new blade in it and cut the lower plastic rivets off. It pulled right out with not much effort.
