Thanks for the laughs guys. Some details: It blew after my third pass through a dip in the trail that was also drifted over. Probably around 3 feet of snow, I made a couple passes since another truck had made it through but was stuck up the hill and I went to help him get unstuck. On the way back down I made it through but the other guy didn't, when I went to back up to toss him a strap was when things went south - lots of grinding and I couldn't engage reverse, found I couldn't engage in any gear.
The people I was with chose to get off the mountain as it was snowing pretty heavily and icing up and were fearing their safety. Rode down with another guy and called in reinforcements that weren't worried about the conditions and went back up to bring my truck down. About 6" of new snow had fallen between the breakage and second attempt to get down.
I'm guessing the break had settled/cleared(?) because this time I could engage the CDL and drive it out. The drive out was sketchy due to snow & ice conditions especially on an icy downhill section where we all did some unintended 180's & 360's but all made it out just fine.
The CV was original at 180K miles and the left one had already started to fail and I replaced it. Obviously I should have done both at that time but cash was tight so I didn't. I replaced both with stock parts since they held up to my abusing them for so long I figure they'll be good for another 100K of abuse.
The lesson learned was not to wheel with wusses that get scared by some snow and wheel with the guys willing to help me out instead.
