Taking apart the front differential question

Hi All. I have managed to break my cv axle on the right (passenger) side of my 2002 4runner. It broke off inside the differential tube though (see pictures).

It looks like I should be able to take off the right side of the differential without pulling it however, does anyone know if the intermediate shaft #2 is hollow on the center side to allow me to put something in there to knock out the broken piece?

You can remove the entire tube with intermediate shaft and then work on it at a bench to extract broken CV Stub. I don't think you can just remove the snap rings and bearing to pull the entire #2 intermediate shaft, I think you will need to pull the entire tube if there is a 3nd snap ring at the diff end of #2 intermediate shaft.

Hi Malcolm, thanks for the reply. I eventually figured this out by watching a whole bunch of videos on youtube until I found what I needed.

What I ended up doing was drilling a hole in the broken shaft, tapping it then putting in a bolt and pulled it out. It worked pretty good and went reasonably smooth. Just had to be patient doing it.
