Please let me know if your transmission does this. I've never had a vehicle that did until this one. (This is a 2007 SR5 V6 2WD with 24,000 miles.)
- Find a flat, straight section of road with no traffic following you.
- Put it in D (for Drive.)
- Bring the vehicle up to 45 MPH or so, without pushing it hard, until the overdrive/torque converter locks up and drops the engine RPM like it should.
- Then let off the gas completely and coast.
Now:
- When the speed reaches about 33 MPH, does the transmission engage itself, and apply engine braking, and noticeably slow the vehicle, without you doing anything at all?
- Then after it slows itself down to about 20MPH, does the transmission disengage itself and then allow the vehicle to freely coast?
Mine does this, set in D for Drive. Iv'e never seen this behavior in a transmission. It has to be hurting gas mileage since I have to re-apply the gas where I used to coast along freely before.
I took a ride with a Toyota service foreman and he noticed it right away but said he wasn't sure if it was normal and wanted to test another 2007 but we didn't have time then.
Does yours do this?
Thanks.
