Does your gas cap have a leash?

I bought my 4Runner from a dumbass so the gas cap was lost and replaced with a Stants generic cap before purchase.

I've never thought of replacing it til lately, I noticed a small hole on the back of the gas door, one that looks like it would support a little "leash" if you will. I can't remember, but I think the 4th gen has one.

I wouldn't mind replacing mine back to OEM (the journey continues to make mine OEM as hell) and I want a leash.

My OEM didn't have a leash. I now have a stant aftermarket as well. I might go back to the OEM cause the stant is always really hard to get off when I fill.

There is the nice little hanging bracket on the inside of the gas door. You can hook the threads on the arms and hold it there.

Just snapped a pic of mine, I believe it is OEM although I do not have a place to hang the cap I do have a leash.

Also I need to clean it out in there!...

I checked here at work and the parts EPC shows that a gas cap for an '02 Runner has a leash but only for that year.
It would be cool to get one with a leash and never worry about losing it.

You have the little arms to hook the threads into, try that.

Awesome, so they do come with one.

I have the threads thing, it's great and all, but sometimes I knock it off and the cap lands on the floor... I hate that feeling.

So looks like I'll be ordering an 02 cap

I prefer the arms on the fuel door to hold it since sometimes the leash is a bit long and it hangs and rubs on the paint below the door.

My '97 has the arms on the gas door to store the cap while you're filling up, and my '01 has the leash. I'm with RonMaiden, I like the storage on the door a little better. The leash just hangs there an dangles while you're filling up, and does rub on the body. On my '97 I just take the gas cap and set it on the roof while I fill up, but I've had to get out of the truck a few times before I drove off to make sure I remembered to put it back on... with the leash you have to put it back on or you can't close the gas door.

My '99 just has the arms to hold it on the door. Definitely prefer that to my 06 Tundra which has a leash just long enough to let it hang down against the paint. I know it probably does nothing, but it still bugs me nonetheless.

Its unusual that the 01-02 has the leash but not the door hanger. Since the older ones like your 97 and my 99 have the door hanger and the required hole for the leash. Why not have the best of both worlds?

My main objective is to have the leash to hold the gas cap in place in the case that I accidentally drop it. I use the thread holder thing every time but I cringe every time it falls. I want that security so I don't have a broken gas cap at the pump.

Plus why the hell not haha, if I'm gonna spend the money on an OEM cap, I want a freakin leash lol
