For some reason, mine pops off randomly on its own. My old car would automatically go to recirc when I had the knob set to max A/C, and this one doesnt. I have to press the recirc button and the orange light illuminates, and after a few minutes I have air blowing in my face and have to press it again. On a 10 mile trip I have to press it 4 or 5 times, and its getting annoying. Does anyone elses do this, or should I take it in?

I dont have a limited, so negative on the climate control. I didnt know about the humidity sensors, thats good to know. Still irratating though, I wish I could turn them off. I'll have to dig through the owners manual again. I read it cover to cover first night I got my truck but havent really looked at it since. Thanks =)

Most of the cars I've owned only have the recirc button go for 8-10 minutes. Then it clicks itself off. Pretty normal behavior I think. Why do you want it on all the time?
Sounds like the same problem that the 4th Generation has.
• When it is cold...it is never on RECIRC automatically.
• It is usually on RECIRC when it is hot outside.
It is probably because outside TEMP is hotter than interior TEMP, so the vehicle puts it in RECIRC, so it doesn't draw in outside hot air.
When I put it in LOW, it usually on RECIRC if outside air is hot, but if I leave it on 65, it is usually NOT on RECIRC.
Do what I suggest above & see if that changes it.

Ok so I drive a Tundra, the 4Runner is my wife's, but I believe they are probably the same. The recirc button goes back to open after 3 minutes if it's cooler outside than it is inside. If you turn it on and then hold the recirc button for 5 seconds or so it will stay on recirc. On the tundras the dealership can use techstream to change this setting to manual only. If it has something to do with humidity then that is new to me.

Maylon, that does work. Hold the recirc button down for 5 seconds or so and it will stay on indefinitely until you click it again. Even turning the truck off then on it stays illuminated. Much appreciated =)
I'll have the dealer do the TIS mod to make it manual, it looks like it is a customizable option like nash said.

Also, I posted this before. I've heard it's not safe to keep the recirc button for long periods of time. It's only recirculating the air in the cabin. That means if you have it turned on long enough, oxygen is depleated and you can get VERY sleepy. My VW owners manual warns against this for my Jetta ...
I just dont like it blowing in my face. I open the sunroof or something like that but theres no need to have that fan blowing. Especially when its warm outside and I dont feel like using the AC, it blows hot engine air at you even when set to max cold. Ive done this with every car Ive owned, and turn it to fresh once in a while when I do use the AC or when its cold and I want heat in the cabin. None of mine have ever smelled what so ever. Maybe if you left it on recirc for a really long time, but if you circulate it every few weeks I wouldnt worry about it.

My recirc stays on always, 5 hour road trip and never went off.
The AC system in you 4runner is similar to the one in your house, actually the same. The moisture that collects inside the housing that contains the evaporator has an opening. This opening allows the condensed water to drain outside of the vehicle. Stinky AC's occur when the system has water constantly in it (evaporator mildews or molds) or you don't change the filter.
Recirculating the AC helps drop the humidity in the car, dries out the evaporator and helps mitigate longterm AC smell. Also, something else to try is to turn off the AC but let the blower go for a few minutes before you stop the car, it helps bring the evaporator back up to ambient temperature to stop condensing after you turn the car off and the water just sits there in the car until driven again.

I should add that vehicles are not air tight so even with recirc on, you still have humidity entering the vehicle from outside, but it's still better than letting unconditioned air come in constantly from the system.
A good analogy would be leaving the door open to your house while the AC is running vs. keeping the doors shut.
