Dog Proofing my new 4Runner?

Actually a 42" wire crate is recommended for dogs up to 90lbs. A 42" crate fits perfectly between the wheel wells, can be tied down with ratchet straps and the rear seats can still be utilized.

42 in for one dog not 3 as the op mentioned he had

it doesnt matter what you do you will never stop the dog hair.
Two choices don't take the dogs if your are worried about hair or your brand new car (kids are not different the dogs they make a mess) or go buy a shop vac and call it a day.

And safety disclaimer, she has a ClickIt Sport harness that she wears that I had not yet put on when I took the photo. And her light weight disables the smart airbag in the front seat just like a small child or car seat would.

I used to have my dog in the back seat with a Kurgo hammock. She's a 50 lb mutt, and it worked pretty well with the dog hair. That's until the kids came, now she goes in the cargo area in a crate line with a memory foam dog bed. I find she's happier there, she actually gets more space to herself and I can load the cargo area around her without fear of the stuff falling on her. I also just reverse the Kurgo hammock and let it fall behind the second row seats and secure it under the all weather mat, which keeps most drool and hair off of the upholstery. If you go the crate route as many have mentioned make sure you tie it down/secure it. I also roll up a towel and put it at the base of the crate to roll out (like the red carpet) so her claws don't do a number on the bumper plastic every time she hops in and out.

Lastly the dog window/rear door covers are awesome if you have a dog in the back seat. I still have them up, even though the dog is in the cargo area to protect the doors from the kids (and make it more difficult for them to play with the door handle and window button.

Ruff Tough Kennels. Fits in perfectly with the cooler and camping gear! Definitely helps with the dog hair, and keeps your best friend(s) safe and comfy!

What size ruff tough is that? My pup is coming in a week and want to get him a ruff tough. Just trying to see how the individual sizes fit in the 4 runner.

Yep - My poodle is welcome anywhere in the truck she wants to go. She is still known to roll in the dirt when i take her to the barn, but at least she doesn't shed.

It's an intermediate double door crate. Fits perfectly against the back of the back seat. Here are two in there side by side.

Looks like a good fit in there. Only problem is right now the pup is 9 weeks so trying to guage his weight when he grows. Sire is 90lbs and dam is 75 lbs. so may go with the large Ruff Tough as i think the intermediate will be too small.

This is what I am looking for. The floor is the least of my concern, but the dogs nails on the hard plastics/etc are what I worry about. Does this cover any of the inside of the rear lift gate?

It was an extra cost but yes it covers the rear lift gate up to the window.

I use a moving blanket. My husky is just a puppy still so he isn't shading. Like the floor though. I have husky liners installed let's see if this will work out

I know most people have their dogs ride in the cargo area but Liyah has always had the backseat. This is what I do. Especially when it's a rougher road.
Hammock seat covers, harness with seatbelt attachment, door protector and a pipe insulation on the window.

does anyone know any manufacturer that makes some form of protection / liner for the rear trunk interior door.

I plan to put my dog in the back trunk area, and knowing her, she's going to scratch up the rear interior panel of the trunk door because she likes to perch herself up and stick her nose out the rear window likely. Any suggestions or alternatives would be greatly appreciated.

(that's also removable without taking out my whole socket set and drill) Seen a few generic universals ones but my dog can easily stick her paws through that and scratch the rear seats. Thought about using the cargo net, but that doesn't deter her from sticking her paw through it.

I'm not sure how big your dog is. I have Rhodesian Ridgebacks (75-95lbs) and I have used three different crate sizes. I use the Midwest Double Door Lifestyles crates because they are heavier gauge metal and won't bend when you ratchet them down. I do not recommend the Midwest "icrate" model. I simply use the existing tie down brackets in the cargo area of the 4Runner and use two ratchet straps to secure the crate. Crate sizes.... the 36" Long and 42" Long crate will both fit between the wheel well of the cargo area. But you must purchase the Double Door model, so that it fits sideways into the cargo area and you can open the door. You will still be able to use the backseat.

Because I have two dogs, I use two "SUV" Crates (pictured below), also made by the Midwest Company. These are 36" Long, however they are not as wide so they fit side-by-side facing the rear of the cargo area. The only down side is that this prevents use of the back seat. I also tie these down using ratchet straps. It takes about 5 minutes for me to accomplish this.

I have a rear cargo liner, but now i use this exact seat cover with a harness on the dog. It's the best. Super easy to take out when I have people riding in the back seat and my dog loves it.

Even if you have a cargo liner, I suggest picking one of these up if you ever want to protect the back seat with the seats up. super easy and simple.

I have a rear cargo liner, but now i use this exact seat cover with a harness on the dog. It's the best. Super easy to take out when I have people riding in the back seat and my dog loves it.

Even if you have a cargo liner, I suggest picking one of these up if you ever want to protect the back seat with the seats up. super easy and simple.

I just received it yesterday and installed in 2 minutes this morning. I should have gotten on years ago :thumb:
