Doing TBU, also need dust shields

My rotors are a tad warped, and the calipers are looking kinda rough. I keep smelling the front brakes a little even with mild braking. So, I figure if I'm replacing everything anyway, might as well do the TBU.

I'm probably shooting for the 199 version since I have the split spoke wheels.

My dust shields on the front are rusted out too. Since I'm replacing them, is it possible to get the Tundra shields that match the 199 calipers? If so, anyone have the part number?

Hey Wally, you do realize you have to press out the hub to replace your brake dust shields? Unless you cut them in half and re-weld them back together, replacing the dust shields is a WHOLE lot more involved than you think it is. You'd have to perform a bearing replacement and all the associated seals and snap rings because the bearings are destroyed upon removal of the hubs and all the seals and snap rings get deformed and damaged in the process as well.

As for Tundra brake shields fitting on your knuckles, I don't know if they will bolt up.

Yes they will since those look like the "flower" type wheels on the 01-02's.

I did not know that. The shields aren't even a complete circle are they? I mean, they have a big chunk missing where the calipers sit. I assumed I could pull them straight back, not out over the hub.

I was also wrong about my wheels. I have these.

Would the larger Tundra calipers fit with those wheels?

I faced this dilemma. They are a complete circle, but about 40° is just a bolthole strap. I looked around the site and the answer is you can "keyhole" the new shields so that they slide on from the side. You lose maybe two boltholes out of six--or three out of eight, I don't remember. Not that much has to be cut off. A few minutes with a vise and a Sawzall or cut-off disk is all it takes. I did mine two years ago.

I don't know about the Tundra part, but if you will post the Toyota p/n for the 199 calipers, I think I can backtrack to the Tundra shield p/n. Although, if you are keyholing as I suggest, it may not make any difference. I also have no idea if they will fit, but with the p/n, we can maybe get a picture.

Hey Durk, I just did the manual hub swap on my rig and there's only 4 bolts holding those dust shields on the knuckle. So, maybe you lose one bolt hole and you still have 3 holding it onto the knuckle.

That could be. Whatever it was, it seemed pretty solid when done.

So, yeah, that's right.

What I did was save the bolthole at the bottom, cutting to leave some metal around it. Then I sort of extended the top line of the cut-out wedge to make a cut big enough to slide over the narrowest part of the knuckle. You don't have to do it so it slides right onto the boltholes; that would take a bigger hole. What you lose is pretty much protected by the caliper. I think function is pretty much retained.

I think I'll go with the 231mm since my wheels are compatible.

I *think* this is the correct parts list. Looking through the Tundra models the first few years have a different part number for the calipers which I verified is the 199mm version. Then about 2004 it changes, which I'm pretty sure was the switch the 13WL 231mm calipers.

Shows the dust shield, in an illustration only. Looks to be compatible, has four bolt holes anyway. Still trying to find an actual picture and/or dimensions.

They do look similar, but can't say more than that. I could not find a picture.

I went with the 4runner shields. Key-holed as shown above by the Durk, retaining 3 of the 4 bolt holes. You also have to trim further to account for the larger calipers.

Im in the process of swapping out my front bearings. The new bearings im installing are pre-pressed assembly. In know the old dust shield is pressed into the assembly. Will I be able to replace the dust shield since the new assembly is already pressed.

Also I cant find after market shields anywhere and the OEM are crazy expensive. Anyone else have any luck finding new ones?

This is the 3rd gen section. There may be some guys on here who can help but you'll probably have better luck in the 4th gen section.

Welcome!

Did any of yall have a rattle around the shield from cutting 1 of the 4 bolt holes out? I'm about to replace mine because the old ones have rusted out and pieces are falling off and occasionally grinding when I'm driving. The shop said it wasn't a big deal but I'd rather replace them.

No rattle whatsoever.
