Doing valve cover gaskets this weekend

Ok so im doing my VCG's on my 95 3.0 this weekend while im in there im going to also replace my air intake plenum gasket, PCV vale and grommet, EGR valve gaskets and replace any damaged vacuum hoses. Any suggestions of other stuff to replace while its open?

I just finished this on my runner last week. You may probably want to clean the throttle body, check all your hoses for wear and tear, replace if necessary, and most importantly don't over tighten those valve cover bolts. I made the mistake of over tightening it and broke two bolts off. My stupidity took over that day as I misread the FSM stating that it should be 48inch foot pounds, but I read it as 48lbs/ft. That mistake ruined the whole day, which ended in me cursing and wanted to break a lot of things.
 
double check and make sure the knock sensor wires alright. it runs up through the bottom of the intake on the right side. they tend to kink and crack.
 
First, clean the **** out of the engine bay. Chase the threads on the intake before reassembly and put anti-seize on the intake bolts. Also a new upper plenum and throttle body gasket.....While you have the throttle body off for cleaning, unscrew the throttle position sensor and check the spring, it should return easily when you rotate it. Good luck
 
Ok so i just got the upper intake plenum off tonight and i noticed the intake holes are really gunked up it looks like old burnt up oil and dirt is this normal??? I will post pictures later.

Absolutely not. I just finished doing the same task and mine had some minor carbon deposits, that was it.
Is it gritty like sand? Did you ever U-boat your Runner?
 
first time

I'm looking at tackling this when I get back from vacation with the family. I just picked up a 1995 T4R with 187,000 miles on it. Got it for a cool $1000. Any advice for a first timer? I've changed the front valve cover gasket on my wife's 1999 Toyota Sienna but the T4R has a lot more to take off.
Would you recommend making the vacuum hoses? Taking pictures as I can go so I can use them as reference once I start to put it back together?

I use small colored wire ties to mark all the lines. You can get them at walmart or any parts store. Just buy a package that has a bunch of different colors. When all colors are used then start doubling, tripling, etc...

I never got to mark anything :( I got under my hood and had to finish the job that someone else did. I'm amazed all the hoses found their way home!
 
parts and where from

Thank you for the quick reply. I have been out of town and working so I haven't been able to get to the runner. My next question is parts, other threads mention the following:

VC Gasket
Intake Plenum gasket
PCV valve and gromet
Spark Plugs
Spark plug wires
Spark plug seals(same as spark plug tube gaskets?)
Cam shaft housing plug(does this apply to the 3.0?)
16 washer seals--valve cover bolts
Throttlebody gasket.

I've been pricing them with rockauto and I've found that they have the best prices by far and if I match up everything with one vendor I'll be able to get everything combined in one shipment.

Should I do more parts or less? Is there a better place to get the parts?
