Door lock actuators.....

I have a 2014 sr5 with 63k miles. About 3 months ago my driver side door lock stopped working. I could manually lock and unlock with the key but not with the electronics in the car or the fob. Took it to the dealer and cost me over $400 to replace. I did it because I was stretched for time and frankly the driver side door is a pain in the a$$ to manually lock and unlock every time getting in and out of the car. Last week my passenger side left door started acting up (wouldn’t lock and unlock and because of that malfunction the headlights don’t turn off when licking the car - they will still turn off with the timer though). I ordered the part from amazon for $50 on prime and took an hour this morning to replace the part. It was relatively easy and saved me $400, but it’s still concerningthat the actuators are failing at this rate.

Has anyone else had any problems like this? I looked online and it seems there are some who report similar issues but not many? I had a wiring issue where my rear passenger door speaker and hatch speaker stopped working too so I hope I don’t have some electrical surge gremlins shorting out my stuff!!!

i don't have any real data to base this on, but from reading posts here it seems like it's a fairly limited issue but if you have problems with door actuators you're likely to have problems again in the future

you can also just replace the motor

Yeah well I hope I limited future problems by replacing with an all new assembly. I saw the write up on the motor replacement but I don’t have the time or patience for that....would likely break something from getting frustrated or forceful. The actuator was easy enough to replace and gives a bit of peace of mind that the entire assembly is new. I hope it doesn’t continue to happen and isn’t a predictor of more issues down the road.

mine was replaced at 26k miles. 20k miles miles later and it appears its gonna happen again. This is one of the reasons i purchased the extended warranty.

Replacement Motors - Amazon

These are the motors that I purchased from Amazon. I haven't had any problems with them. I've replace two on my 2010 Limited so far. My son just notified me that the auto lock on his 2014 Tacoma isn't working, and I suspect the motor. Appears that this is a fairly widespread Toyota problem. Good news is that the motors are easy to replace. It takes about three seconds. Bad news is getting to the motors is a royal pain. This part takes about an hour.

My wife has a scion. I had to replace the passenger and drivers side door. Maybe just a Toyota problem in general?

The replacement of the motor in the actuator isn't really that hard. The motor is way cheaper than replacing the actuator. I've replaced two motors in a couple different doors and they have been humming along just fine for a couple years.

So the front passenger side went out a couple days ago. Completely unresponsive at all times. Changed it out this morning after ordering from amazon prime. Bad news is it cost me $62; good news is that I can now do the repair in my sleep. Literally took 20 minutes
