Door not unlocking when grab outside handle (smart key)

Sounds like you have a piece of the internal lock mechanism sticking. If you are handy then you can pull the door panel and figure it out. If not, the dealer is but a phone call away lol. Seriously though if all other locks are unlocking then it has to be a lock component in the door. It could be a rod, actuator or even the latch itself.

Faulty door lock actuator. Replaced under warranty. I was told the repair cost would have been $462 outside of warranty.

Hold down the lock and unlock buttons at the same time for 5-7sec to change drivers door to open all doors (2 beeps), repeat to change back (1 beep)

Thanks for this tip. I just took my 1st trip in my 14 and found the factory setting very annoying. I searched the owners manual and did not see a way to change it. I searched this forum and found this link. The locks works just how I like it now.

I've heard dealers will give you a 'one-time' courtesy programming on new purchases..

Awesome find on the holding the remote buttons to change the unlock behavior! Just did it on my 2014.

I like the smart key buy on most cards if you press or tap twice it just opens all doors. Seems kind of silly Toyota doesn't work that way.

the key fob does actually on the push to start equipped vehicles.

now if they could only move to the next version of push to start that would be awesome (aka lexus, some have a smart card system)

credit card in your wallet instead of the key fob.

Meh.... it's 3-4x the thickness of a credit card. Too big for a wallet IMO. Plus it is a much more rigid plastic from what I understand, which might make it more prone to cracking under the flex that a wallet typically sees. I know all of my current credit cards have a slight curve to them and I can't imagine that is a good thing for electronics.

that would work for me, since I never actually carry my wallet in my back pocket anymore. usually its in the front pocket (5 finger discount people), inside zipped jacket pocket or I put it in the inside door pocket when driving.

I can no longer keep it in the back pocket due to issues sitting on it. the front pocket reminds me to remove it when I get in the vehicle.

now the fob works great since I have it on a carbiner and just clip it to my right side belt loop. that reminds me, i need to go out and get a locking carbiner for those unsavory locations.

Starting Saturday, my driver door has not been unlocking consistently when I grab the outside door handle (when I grab the door handle, not press the unlock button on the fob). It will beep normally and it sounds like the unlock mechanism is activating and other doors will unlock (suggesting it's not a sensor problem), but the driver door does not unlock. Sometimes it will beep six times instead of the normal two times, but still not unlock. I do not have the same issue on the passenger side.

It's happened in various locations and I have no reason to suspect any interference or batter problem (~6 months old).

Anyone else experience this / have any suggestions? The manual did not seem to cover my observations.

I have a similar problem but when I grab the door handle nothing happens. Its like my whole system is dead. To start the car i have to hold the key up to the push start button. I am not sure what happened one day it work the next day it didnt.

I changed the battery in both my key fobs and it still does not work. The unlock/lock buttons work but its the keyless entry via the door handle and push button start.

Only other thing I can think of is to get my car battery tested.

Does valet key disarm keyless entry?

Just got my preowned 4runner, and on day one, all the doors were locking and unlocking just fine. I figured I'd test out the valet key, and once I did that, the driver's door no longer responds to the lock/unlock buttons. All other doors do, but I have to physically insert the key into the driver's side door to open it now.

I figured maybe the use of the valet key put it into some other mode for security purposes. I consulted the manual and didn't find anything (and nothing online) and I've tried every combination of locking/unlocking/starting the engine, etc. with both types of key, in an attempt to get it back into normal working mode.

Or is it the greatest coincidence in the world that the lock burned out the very first time I tried the valet key on the day I brought the car home?

probably the small actuator, if it doesnt work with the lock/unlock buttons on the door panel as well. They posted a youtube video page one how to do. The actual part is $5. Toyota will also fix for $500+
