Doors lock, when closed, and vehicle running.

Hello everyone,
So I'm not sure why I didn't realize this all last winter, or it is a possibility that it was not working correctly then, but it's finally cold weather where I live again, requiring a short warm-up before I leave for work. Started the runner to let it heat up. Came back outside, and I was locked out. LOL Now, on all my bmw's, and VW's I've owned over the years you can change codings with a scan tool to turn on/off features like this, and even my old Jeeps were smart enough to not lock the doors running in park, unless you physically hit the switch, or put it in drive.

So my question is, does the Toyota dealer have the ability to turn off that feature with the factory scan tool, or do I have something in the ignition switch, or whatever module(s) controls the locking functions failing?

Also, it's a '97 limited W/ E-locker. It could have remote entry, but the previous owner only gave me 1 key, and no remotes.... so I'm not sure, but there is a little raised "button" with two small metal circles on it in the center console that says "security" on it as well. (Just trying to give you guys all the details.) Any info is greatly appreciated!

The box under the drivers seat is the security. Search hear for the directions. You can get a aftermarket FOB for less than 20 dollars on Amazon.

LOL, I got locked out at my Sisters house 200 miles from home with the engine running back in 2010. My issue was the drivers door switch that tells the security system that the door is closed & to stay unlocked. You can tell if there's a problem if the dome light doesn't go on or off. If you open the door & the dome light doesn't come on just push the switch with your finger until you replace the switch.

so I have not had mine lock me out, but I did have issues with my auto locks sometimes working and sometimes not. then the other day I noticed my dome light was not coming on with the drivers door opened. I pushed the door jamb button many times and sometimes it would come on sometimes not turn off and sometimes flicker. I then checked all my door jamb swtiches and sure enough only the drivers door was doing it.I started a thread a few days ago about this, and TheDurk confirmed that if the door switch is acting up, then it will block out the auto function. SO I guess if it is acting up maybe it can make it autolock ?
Put a new switch in yesterday ( aftermarket did not want to wait for Toyota to order) and everything is working like it should.
Aftermarket was a few dollars less than Toyota and it I lived nearer to town and wanted to wait I would have gone Toyota.
My next camelback order I am going to order a Toyota switch and either swap it out again and have the aftermarket as a back up in my box of parts.

In anycase, I have a spare key hidden on my truck and not one of those plastic key boxes with magnets that can drop off on a good bump

I know it's none of my business but, have you ever read/heard that letting your vehicle run to warm up is not good for the engine, is a waste of gas, and is asking to get your ride stolen?

Move one of the rear door switches to the front & put the aftermarket in the rear. it's usually the drivers door that gets worn out.

I like to do it for 5 mins on Cold mornings via remote start.

The vehicle can be locked from the outside for those without remote start... :cowboy:

Letting your engine warm up is not bad for your vehicle. Sitting in traffic for hours is worse than sitting there for 5 minutes letting your truck warm up.
