Doors self locking

Randomly the doors on my 2007 4Runner lock without me touching the remote. Sometimes I unlock them and they re-lock themselves within seconds. Sometimes it is a race for me to hit the unlock button and then release the door handle from the outside before the locks immediately re-engage.

Sometimes the locks work perfectly and stay unlocked for minutes, days and weeks. There seems to be no pattern to this random behavior.

Any thoughts?

I guess it's possible the your fob is going bad, do you only have one, if you have 2 do both do the same?

If you only have one you may want to get a new one, get it programed and hopefully it will work properly.

Another quick question, do you ever carry your fob in your pocket and if so is that when it malfunctions?

Pull the battery from the fob and unlock the truck for a week or two using the key only. A minor inconvenience. If it still happens, it's not the fob. I'd also put in a fresh battery just to touch that base.

It doesn't matter if it is in my pocket or not. I can be holding the fob in my hand and unlock the doors, and it literally can lock within a second of me unlocking the door with the fob.

I might try that. I pulled the fob apart and blew it clean, but I don't think I replaced the battery on the fob.

You may be confusing the built in auto-locking security feature with randomness. The system is designed to lock after about 30 seconds. If a door is not opened within 30 seconds, the system interprets this as accidental button push and locks the doors.

On a side note, I wish to gripe about the panic button but I am a new owner and this has to be an old problem.

No, it locks immediately. I am familiar with it locking if not opened within 30 seconds, but I can be standing right at the door, and it can lock immediately after I unlock it, and if I do not grab the door handle fast enough, it will relock the door immediately.

IIRC, fob receiver is behind the upper plastic trim in the rear hatch pillar. I don't have the electrical diagrams but I am guessing the fob receiver is sending spurious signal to the door module that controls door lock actuator. If water has leaked onto them, open modules and clean them. Also check wiring.

Automatic door locking and unlocking systems

The following functions can be set or canceled:

Shift position linked door locking function - Shifting the shift lever out of P locks all the doors.

Shift position linked door unlocking function - Shifting the shift lever to P unlocks all the doors.

Speed linked door locking function - All the doors are locked when the vehicle speed is approximately 12 mph (20 km/h) or higher.

Driver's door linked door unlocking function (vehicles without a smart key system) - All the doors are unlocked when the driver's door is opened within 10 seconds after turning the engine switch to “ACC” or “LOCK”.

Driver's door linked door unlocking function (vehicles with a smart key system) - All the doors are unlocked when the driver's door is opened within 10 seconds after turning the “ENGINE START STOP” switch off.
