Has any ever tried one of these boxes or any other down firing sub box? How does it sound? Any opinions? 4Runner SUV box

Why do you want a down firing box?
I would guess that it wouldn't affect the sound a huge amount since bass isn't directional. Mainly I'm considering it because I can get it carpeted to match the interior so if anyone peers into the window they don't really see my subs. Also it would be nice to throw stuff in the back and not worry about putting a hole into one of my subs.
I'd just have to find a discrete place to mount my amp.

I have a waterproof marine down facing 12" kicker box. keeps the mud out my speaker. Sounds fine.

i had the box that u linked too... well not exactly. My friend had one built for his '96 landcruiser and i got it from him when we built him a custom one and well it worked pretty well but the one i had was a bit large. Though it put out about the same amount of sound but ya the benefit was like u said it wouldnt damage the subs when putting stuff in the trunk.

I built my own box...2 down firing 12s.. in my 97 SR5 4Runner. Worked great! Bass is omni-directional...so...I really don't think it matters. I hear no difference with the subs down firing vs. up-right and such. I built the box this way for security reasons. I still have it too haha, I should throw it in my 2006 4runner

If I remember correctly, in SUVs subs pointed up are louder. I think I remember reading that on caraudio.com. It won't be a huge difference though.

If it's a sealed box, it makes no difference how it is placed as long as the air space for the subwoofer you will utalize is correct. Subwoofers are omni-directional "to a point", in such a small space as a truck it does not matter much how the subwoofer is placed. I mean you can make some crazy trapazoid sub box sound fine, if built corrrectly. Ported & vented boxes are different, subwoofer placement for them is key.
To hide the box, I suggest just using the tonneau cover your truck came with, what they can't see they won't steal. Keep it closed. Like anyone who has had a stereo stolen in the past, learn to never use it near where you live, kids will follow you and they will take it. It's the nature of the beast, those who want but can't afford will get it however they can. Make sure they don't know it exists and they will never try.
