I gotta make a decision between a new 05 Sport 4WD V6 and 05 Sport 4WD V8. For the V8, MSRP is $35431; internet selling price $31,100; trade-in $22,500; Cash Difference $8,600 MINUS $1,500 Toyota Rebate: $7,100. For the V6, MSRP $33,336; internet selling price $29,900; tradein $22,500; Cash difference $7,400 MINUS $500 Toyota Rebate: $6,900.

Are these good deals?

What choice would YOU make? WHY!

Does the difference in price represent anything other than the difference in engines? Will you ever tow? That could help you decide between the V6 and V8. Also, do you have a lot of mods in mind? If so, you might want to go with the V6 so you have some money left over . . . .

invoice + 495 (destination charge) + 500 (commission or less) is all I would pay for. No other fees etc etc or anything. this plus tax/dmv fees only (gov't stuff only).

do the math from there and if the number is around what you're being quoted then the deal is good. otherwise... walk

What is your trade in WORTH? And what do you OWE on it? The MSRP sounds a little high on the V-8, But for real get the V-8 if that is the best price you can get. I like my V-6 but I would gladly pay 200 bucks more for a V-8... no brainer dude..

it's a no brainer. I have the lousy 4 speed auto on my 2003 v6. but the 5 speed auto is now on both v6 adn v8. if you test drive the v6 and v8 u will find very little difference going at over 55 mph!

also, you get better gas milage on the v6. the trip computer always tells me i'm getting an average of 17 mp gallon. :-(

AND the oil filter on the v6 is right under the hood !!!! easy location or what?

no brainer

You will notice little difference over 55mph?!?!?!

I'm sorry, but that's a load of bull...

Coming out of my office I pull out onto the frontage road of the highway and go straight up a hill for about 1/4 to 1/2 of a mile to get onto the entrance ramp to the highway. I test-drove a V6 and noticed that even with the 5-speed auto, it tended to 'peter out' around 65mph, requiring me to get my foot deeper into the throttle to continue accelerating at the same rate (even on flat ground). With my V8 (without VVTi, I might add), it smoothly and EFFORTLESSLY accelerates through 65mph without breaking a sweat on this up-hill entrance to the highway from my office. The '05 V6 I test drove before buying my '03 V8 just didn't have that smoothness while accelerating nor the same power once it got up to speed.

I recently towed about ~3000lbs worth of trailer and barely knew it was back there at 75mph.

Trip computer or not, I got just over 18mpg (calculated by dividing miles traveled by gallons pumped) with my lead foot doing a mix of city and highway driving (mostly city).

I'll spend the extra 5 minutes to unbolt my skid plate to get to my oil filter the whole 13 times I will have to do it in my first 100,000 miles of ownership.

Bottom line, you will get a different answer from everyone here... If it was only $200 difference, I'd say take the '05 V8. My guess is that there are more differences than the dealer is letting you know.

I have a V6 and I have towed 4500 lbs with no problem, even with a car load of people. When I leave work at night, I head up a 10% grade for approximately 1/2 mile before getting on the highway, and it does just fine, but I'm not doing 65 on a back country road (I drive sanely). On the highway, it holds 75-80 with a light touch on the gas.

It has been touched upon several times, but the V6 will feel a little more nimble since it is more than 200 lbs lighter. The V8 will have more torque off the line. I haven't seen the torque curves of either engine - oh and this is for 4wd models, not the 2WD Ricky has. I figured 4WD is definitely needed in Michigan (if you can even find a 2WD)

I'm was comparing the v6 with the old 2003 v8, not the new v8 with more HP.

also, that's a lot of BS telling everyone 18mp gallon on a v8!!! nobody records the gallons pumped in TOTAL. get real! u can't tell us what your trip computer says about your gas milage can u????

the only way I'll buy a v8 is if it's a tomato!

18 MPG from a V8 is NOT BS pal.

Just because YOU can't or haven't done it doesn't mean NO ONE has.

I KNOW you haven't driven EVERY V8 powered 4Runner in the World so you don't know what is possible.

Don't be hatin and until you show me your degree in fuel/air mixture combustion engines, automobile mechanics, or general physics don't call BS until you can PROVE IT. :bash:

Actually, it's not hard at all to get 18mpg out of a V8. Don't be an idiot riding the brakes all the time and watch ahead of you to manage your speed well and you can actually get QUITE decent efficiency out of the V8.

I should be able to get 20mpg out of it by doing 100% highway driving around 70-75mph. As I said, I already got slightly over 18mpg (actually calculated, not by reading the computer) in a mix of city and highway driving.

I'm tired of these V6 vs. V8 "mine is better" arguments. Doesn't matter which one you have, it's the same car and we each have our own reasons for choosing the engine we did.

To me, $200 for the V8 is well worth it. If it were $1200, I'd have a harder time deciding. You're getting more power, better resale (assuming gas prices don't skyrocket), and a generally smoother drivetrain.

Get REAL! you don't be an idiot saying u can get 18 mpg on the highway for x number of time. I'm talking about your entire life of your truck! did you get from your house to the highway doing 75mph??? nobody will post what their trip computer says on the v8 cause the TRUTH hurts!

It is common knowledge that the trip computer reads higher than the vehicle is actually getting. When I reset mine on a short road trip, it ended up showing 20.9mpg when I got to my destination.

As for the entire life of the vehicle, that all depends on how you drive. What we are saying is that the V8 *IS CAPABLE* of getting 20mpg on the highway. Those of us that HAVE the V8 likely bought the V8 for the reason that we want more power on tap when we want it and actually frequently end up using it. Consequently, YES, overall mileage for the life of the vehicle will likely be lower on a V8 due to the fact that you're asking for that V8 power when you want to have fun, which drives the average down.

Now, what part of 215.3 miles traveled and 11.8 gallons burned do you have trouble figuring out? That's 18.245762711864406779661016949153 miles per gallon with a mix of city and highway driving at a SOMEWHAT civilized pace. Some other tankloads have been lower because I have this inability to keep my foot from being buried in the throttle at times, but with 100% highway driving there should be NO reason this vehicle can't get 20mpg like it did on one road trip I was talking about where the computer read 20.9mpg.

I always top off my vehicle to the same point every time I fill up (to where I can see fuel in the neck of the filler), so there is no inconsistency on getting a good top off or not.

oh my god , this guy gives me a headache......jeeZ:bash:

If you tow I would suggest you get the V8 - you will be thankful for the WD hitch and the higher torque. If you don't I would think carefully - if I had my time again I would be more tempted by the V6 now it comes with 5sp - both will hold their value well but with rising gas prices the V6 may sell better in a few years time and will be slightly lighter on your pocket now with gas prices the way they are (there are other considerations around maintenance - timing belt on V8 v chain on V6, iridium plugs v platinum plugs etc - this topic has been argued to death here - a quick search will reveal more).
