downhill coast, slowing

I have noticed that if I am coasting down hill (foot not on the gas or brake), sometimes it feels like something catches and slows me down. Not knowing exactly how to explain it, it feels the same as if I applied the brake.

Is this is binding drive line issue or transmission? I've never had an all wheel drive vehicle, so this could be normal, I don't know. Any input?

It's just engine braking, it's normal. You most likely tapped the brake and released while going down the hill, causing this to happen. It's a love it or hate it feature these trucks have, I don't mind it. Go down the hill in neutral and you may learn to appreciate it once you feel how much braking you'll be doing without it.

engine braking, that's the term I was looking for. I'm not a fan of it. Maybe if a trailer was in tow I would. I guess I'll just have to utilize neutral.

^^^ My thoughts exactly.

First time it happened to me mine went all the way down to 3rd gear and the tach went to the moon and it scared the hell out of me.

The proper way to have this feature on the truck would have been to have it turn on only when a "tow/haul" mode was selected on the shifter like all other trucks I've seen.

I prefer to coast downhills whenever possible to help with the mpgs, the engine braking interferes with that as well.
 
I've mentioned this before, but I'll say it again here too. I HATED this feature on my '03 V8. It was too touchy and I had to press the gas going down hill, any hill. But on my '06, it's great. It only kicks in on major inclines and I can still coast down hills. If anyone else wants to comment on this, feel free. I'm curious as to whether or not Toyota tweaked the system a bit with the mid-generation refresh.

My '05 sounds more like the '06 than the '03.

I've been trying to figure out why this is something I haven't really noticed. It must be because I'm so active with the shifter. If I want any engine braking I do it manually before anything happens automatically. Seems to coast just fine.

Actually I stand corrected. Apparently that is a thing...lots of people with scan gauges report that fuel flow drop when coasting in gear. Fuel flow then picks up once the engine drops to a certain RPM. There you go, I learnt something today!
 
What you're reporting is a "feature". The transmission downshifts for you.

Factory. Normal.

I find it to be annoying, and NOT fun when trailering. Especially in the wet.
 
i've tried to get my 06 to do this purposefully after i noticed it happen a couple of times. How does one activate this feature?
