Downsides for keeping AWD always on?

I have a 2002 with AWD option.


So im pretty sure I its okay, but just wanted to throw it out there. I having trouble with my A.D.D system. actuator is fine but the switch of eco messing up and not telling the actuator to work.

I plan on putting it all back together in awd. By installing actuator with sleeve slid over already. that way I can still use 4wd if needed by locking center diff.

I will continue to work on solving but I don't want to loose the 4wd option for now.

Any thoughts?

as long as you don't lock the center diff then it's ok except for an little increase in fuel consumption

I read in a few different places around the web that the VF3AM muilti-mode case is a bit grumpy when it's hot. The manual says something about not driving above 110km/hr when in AWD (or some speed around there).

The fluid would probably take the brunt of the abuse, so I might suggest to put in some really nice gear oil, like red line, to take the heat.

I didn't know that there was a speed limit for the TC when in AWD. Are you sure you're not referring to the speed when shifting from 2WD to AWD or from AWD to 2WD?

Haven't heard of the heat issue but it wouldn't surprise me. If you look at land cruiser transfer cases (full time awd) they have lots of heat dissipating fins built in. Seems like a reasonable idea to keeps speeds down while in awd to avoid cooking the transfer case.

In addition to increased fuel consumption, you may increase wear on driveline components.

There's no mention of a "speed limit" when in AWD... atleast not that I saw in section 1-6
