Drain and Fill Sealed transmission

I've always read "lifetime" from automotive manufacturers as "lifetime of the warranty period"

My view which is shared by many is "lifetime" means the fluid will last the life of the tranny. When the tranny fails it's reached its end of life regardless of miles.

I'm at 197k and just do a drain and fill now and then to add some fresh fluid while removing some old. It's simple, inexpensive and pretty much fail-proof. I wheel hard, tow a trailer and don't believe in risking any expensive parts by doing what really doesn't need to be done.

Ok new question. I got the tranny temp to 116F, shut off the engine, and then did the level check. At first there was nothing so I put the level check plug back in but then I pulled it 30 sec later and the fluid ran as a trickle. Am I supposed to leave the truck running when I do this check?

With the truck still idling and in "P", remove the overflow plug to check the fluid level (THE ENGINE MUST BE RUNNING WHEN THE OVERFLOW PLUG IS REMOVED). Remember, the Toyota Service Manual describes the fluid being at the correct level when a "small trickle" escapes from the overflow hole. If a steady flow is found, it must be left to drain until all that remains is a "small trickle".

when i did my full drain and refill...I stupidly warmed up the ATF then turned the car off and checked my oil..as soon as all that fluid poured out it hit me..YOU IDIOT lol :redbrick:

Had to go to the dealer the next day to buy another quart to add, then redid the level check
