Drive axle '96 4WD

My son's 4runner has had a vibration from the front end for several months now. A shop he took it to said his tie rods were loose.

So the other day, he's driving to work, and the vibration suddenly gets to a point where the truck is undrivable. So we tow it home, and he pulls off the tire the next day, and the cv boot on the driver side is just grenaded.

I'm assuming the cv joint was the cause of the earlier vibration, and then it failed and tore up the boot...

So I guess we'll just change the whole axle out, but I need to know what's involved in doing this. I've never done this before, but I'm pretty good with fixing stuff as long as I have good info.

a 34 mm socket and some damn good beer, should take you about 1 hour if you follow that guide listed above.

btw reading the comments from the people on that other website drove me nuts. They are talking out of there ass. Its not that difficult to troubleshoot. It wont be a hard fix, just pick up a replacement CV for about 70 bucks with core charge and go to town. :roadkill:

I knew they were making it sound like I shouldn't do it myself...but screw that! I'm not spending $400-$500 to have someone else do it, when I'm plenty capable...

Oh, one thing...is it a 34MM or 35MM socket that I need? (the link says 35MM)

If the thread says 35 its probably 35! I just know it was 30 something and the most important tool to have besides a crowbar :party: Have fun!

I changed both of my axles out a little over a month ago after the boots started to tear. Just follow the instructions and you will be fine.
