drive shaft rattle

A few months ago i replaced my drive shaft and have been very happy with the fix. However, recently a rattle has appeared when driving. I jacked up the rear and put it in gear and located the rattle but dont know what its called..?

Its the front of the drive shaft inside the dust cover. it looks like a big washer...first what is this piece called where exactly is it supposed to be (pressed up closer to transmission or yolk?)? I know i will have to drop the drive shaft again but dont want to until i know how to get this piece where it is supposed to be.

and to be clear this isnt causing any vibration. its just an annoying rattle. the piece must have come off the old drive shaft and i wonder if it serves any purpose actually

I checked the FSM and i didnt see anything that looks like the part i am describing. The diagram is on pages 1158,1159. I did notice they show the dust cover facing two different directions. My dust cover has the opening to the rear of the truck.

Im still looking but would love to hear from somebody who may know...

ok the picture is getting a little clearer. There is a dust cover on the transmission (opening towards the rear) and a smaller on on the drive shaft (opening towards the front) but i still dont know how to secure the one on the drive shaft so it doesnt move!!

not sure if this will work but the black dust cover is loose and not attached to the yoke. I am thinking since the replacement drive shaft wasnt a toyota maybe it wont press on easily or at all?

Not that anyone has been riveted by this thread :shrug: lol but i dropped the drive shaft and used a piece of 2" pvc pipe, chunk of 2X4 and a hammer to "press" the dust cover onto the yoke. it seemed to work great but only time will tell!!

I don't know much about the 2wd version of our trucks, but it seems like the slip yoke on that drive shaft is hanging pretty far out. Was that an OEM shaft or custom? Was your axle hanging at the time of the pic?
