Drive-train/under-carriage questions...

This past weekend I changed out my oil, front and rear diff and transfer case fluids, plugs/wires, air filter and greased the drive shafts' joints. While doing so I noticed a few things.

1. I seem to only have half a front skid plate. Is it two parts? It's tough to tell in this picture, but I only have the bottom half (with 5 bolts).

2. Is the 3.4 prone to oil leaks? When I picked the truck up two months ago it was dry, but I seem to have developed a small leak from the front. The oil filter seemed loose when I changed it, and there was no gasket on the oil drain plug so I'm thinking those may have just worked loose a bit. I'll be keeping my eye on those, but wanted to make sure I there wasn't something I was missing.

3. The front diff drain plug was a PITA. I was on the verge of rounding out the hex so I took it in to the dealer for them to loosen as I have no air tools or a breaker bar. They DID round it out, but were able to air hammer it loose. $29 for that and $15 for a new plug and I feel like I came out ahead on that close one.

4. This is a really stupid question, but how do zerk fittings work? Specifically the adapter on the grease gun. I'm guessing mine was a "universal" adapter, but my method was to slide the adapter over the fitting and tighten it down as much as I could. I then pumped grease until I heard the crackle/pop. The PITA was getting the adapter off the fitting. I couldn't loosen it and pulling it off was just not happening. Is there a simpler way to do this or should I just RTFM?

All in all, the whole process was quite educational. This being my first 4runner (and 4x4) I leaned heavily on the resources on this site. So thank you to all, just for being a part of this community. Up next, a new radiator, transmission flush and filter and new tires.

1) Yes, there are 2 parts to the skid plate. You can probably get the rear one at a salvage yard.

2) Not that I've heard of.

3) Yeah, mine was a bit of a pain too, but I eventually got it with some pb blaster. The replacement OEM plug cost about $6. I wish it was a hex head, not an allen head.

4) You are using it right. To remove it, you just unscrew the tip a bit, then sometimes you have wiggle it in and out to get the little fingers that grip the zerk to recede back a little and release the zerk. The way I usually do it is to not even tighten down the tip, but just use one hand to push the tip against the zerk, and use the other arm to pump. It seems to leak less this way.

thats all the skid you get. and the front diff plug is a PITA! zerk fitting just have to be made your b!tch, and the leaks are prob because there wasnt a gasket so that and the filter being lose are your problems there

Sometimes the oil leaks from the valve cover so I'd check up on those as well.

Do yourself a favor a get a breaker bar (HF has a few cheap options) and thread penetrant (PB Blaster, Screwloose, etc.).

As for the grease fitting, adjust the adapter until it is slightly snug against the zerk and takes some pressure to fit on. Pump the grease, and then you can just pull down/rotate the adapter and it should pop right off.

Thanks guys.

And to the OP, I agree about the oil filter and gasket probably being the culprit of your leaks. When I took my skid plate off the first time, I was like what they heck...it's messy under here. Then I realized the previous owner had a horrible cloth gasket on the drain plug that was ripped and leaking and after my first time of removing the oil filter I quickly realized it's messy! And the trail of oil was consistent with the residue on the truck. Given that they had gone to Valvoline for oil changes I am more than sure they didn't take any care to clean up the spilled oil from the filter.

Do some cleaning underneath, and now that you have already corrected those two issues you should be good!
