Driveline Troubles...

97 4Runner, 2wd 5sp [4cyl]

After 60+ mph I would get an incredible shaking throughout the whole car. Violent even. The u-joints have about 65k on them, but new dana parts are going in, as well as having the driveshaft balanced.

From searches on here, as well as other internet sources, I've read it might not be the driveshaft, especially if I'm encountering other shaking. I read that if it's also happening at 2,000 rpms in 2nd gear, not just over 60mph, than it should NOT be the driveshaft.

I should be getting my driveshaft back today, and I hope it solves the problem, but if it's not, what else could it be?

There is no steering vibration at all, which would indicated an unbalanced tire.

I may not be much help as I am not that mechanically inclined. By your description something wrong with the driveshaft seems likely.

Other things it could be is a missing wheel weight. On a friends truck it would vibrate horribly at certain speeds. He feared the worst but it turned out to be a missing wheel weight on the left rear tire. Fixed free of charge at the shop he bought the tires from. On trucks it can be exaggerated because of the light weight in the back and oversized tires.

Another thing it could be is a very loose tie rod resonating at certain speeds. I have seen this a few times on some vehicles. Had a friend with an 81 VW Rabbit Diesel that did it so bad you can actually see the front wheel vibrating left to right as it went down the freeway. He is a cheap person and never got it fixed until one day it broke. Luckily on a 30 mph residential road so nothing serious. Bottom line don't mess with loose tie rods.

Other then these items i can't think of anything else. I suppose a loose (broken) motor mount could cause some shaking as well at certain speeds but maybe not violent shaking.

yep driveshaft was outta balance, ujoints were a little bad.

Driveline Services in West Sacramento did an amazing job balancing it, new u-joints, and painted the whole thing, for 100 out the door.

Problem is fixed, thankfully!
