Driver side a-pillar grab handle?

Anyone know of have any info on installing a grab handle on the driver side a-pillar? i saw someone on you tube had done one and it looks great but he never responds to anyone's comments on how to do it. looking to know how it can be done on a 2017. thanks guys

the airbag actually pushes the seal out and inflates that way. the handle should not affect anything. if you look at deployed bags you can see the pillar does not move.

Then as long as you make sure whatever backer that holds the bottom handle on doesn't contact the SRS airbag then it should be perfectly safe.

The 4th gen had a driver side handle. Maybe you could adapt one of those.

Should be able to mount the passenger side handle, I just need to get a part number, and you'd use a longer bolt on the top bolt, and make some sort of backer for the bottom, as long as it doesn't affect the airbag.

I use the steering wheel as a handle. Did the same thing in my old 4th gen even though there was a handle there. Works fine. No chance of messing up the airbag. No mods necessary.

Some other cars have it on the drivers side. If you look at Toyota’s own line up the land cruiser has it as well.

I have a drivers side handle in my tundra and I love it.

Repeatedly pulling on the steering wheel will cause issue. It is not meant for that type of side load.

I really like the idea of this, but not knowing IF or how it might affect the airbag is a major concern.

Like for most outcomes it probably wouldn't be an issue, but it'd always be there in the back of my mind.

I suspect it has to do with the size of the door opening, and the steering wheel impinging on that opening as well.

I thinnnnnnk my 3rd gen 4runner had the opposite issue -- it had a a-pillar grab handle, but NOT one overhead.

So there seems to be some kind of space issue causing them to only put one pillar in.

IF that's the case, then I guess if an owner deems it useful, and can fit in with an extra one, cool. But I would definitely have concern with how robustly it's installed causing issues with the airbag.

Exactly, and that may be the crux of the issue, that it was never intended to be a weight bearing element. Walking around town this morning with the dog most modern SUVs don't have grab handles on the driver A-pillar.
