drivetrain whinning sound on 2006 V8?

Hello gents,

My 2006 SE 4x4 V8 seems to emit a bit of a whine(lower pitched sound) when traveling at higher speeds of roughly 65-75pmph when I let off the gas. The sound is not my new tires(only audible when I let off gas). Its tough to say whether its the exhaust or maybe tranny making the noise.....any thoughts or expereinces. Is this normal? I reallly had not noticed it before.

I guess I am getting a bit more anal about its maintenance & etc being my plans of getting the new 2010 fell thorugh due to high lease prices. I have had the truck for 4 years now with just under 60K miles. I have only done the routine maintenance(oil changes, air filter).
edit----I have not noticed any other problems whatsoever other than what I mentioned above, FWIW.

Just want to make sure it gets me through problem free for another year or so

I can just about replicate the problem when traveling around 50mph by putting the tranny in 4th gear. I get that same low sound and a bit of vibration I feel in my feet. Almost sounds like its the tranny, any thoughts, should I take it in?

Sounds like a gear whine. Check you fluids? Could be the tranny, but lets go the cheaper route first and check those. Having the tranny in 4th may put enough engine brake resistance on the drivetrain to make it whine. I hope in the end it's not the transmission, but this might be something for the dealer to look at before it becomes something totally bad (kaput tranny :crybaby.

After reading through the entire thread, the "drone sound" sounds right based on what I am experiencing(minus the steering wheel vibration). There seems to be a TSB for the GX, but nothing mentioned about the 4runner? Any suggestions on how to approach the Toyota dealer with this?

i doubt they will do anything about it... there was no tsb for the 4runner. i only hear it when it's cold outside and i'm on the highway. i'm hoping that maybe the trd exhaust i installed this past summer will somehow eliminate the noise as it gets colder.

well, I guess I will just bring in the Lexus Service Bulletin and see what they say.

Has anyone else attempted to have there 4runner fixed with this Bulletin for the GX?
