yeah i might have to now...the POS won't start now...but it WONT be a toyota I know that much...both toyota's I have owned have gave me problems....I had a 05 corolla xrs that crapped out a fuel pump and ecu with 20k on it, luckily it was under warranty and now this pos 4runner...

I took the truck to a mechanic that specializes in imports rather than going to the stealership, and here is what they found in about 1 hour. They downloaded the ECU and it still shows a misfire on #2 cylinder, incorrect spark plugs, and the timing is re****ed 15-20 degrees. So he suspects that the timing belt may have jumped, so I give him the go ahead to dig into the timing belt and here is what they find, the bolt which holds the Crank pulley on is NOT tight enough, this being said the crankshaft timing gear hole is extremely elongated, hence the reason my truck is running like crap, so I will need a new one along with the idler bearings that were not replaced when the timing belt was done about 15k ago, I do not have an estimate from him yet, he called me at about 5:30 closing time and told me all the bad stuff. Now here is what I would like some advice on, the original mechanic is the one who did the timing belt when my dad owned the 4runner, I want to know if there is anyway I can get him to pay for the screw up since they apparently did not torque the bolt along with the plugs and wires that were replaced when they told me they fixed my original problem for the misfire on #2 cylinder, or am I SOL? Serious advice only please.

Finally got the runner back a few weeks and it runs like a champ now. Cost me $979 though. The main culprit was the crank timing gear and I'll post a pic to show why.

The area marked in red is where the Key is not suposed to wear, this happens when the bolt holding the crank pulley and this gear is not torqued to its specified rating of 185 ft lbs, yeah it's alot. I spoke with the mechanic who originally did the timing belt and installed the wrong plugs, and they gave me some money back for their screw up.

damn from being a young mechanic, i did not even think about timing! i feel so dumb, but glad to hear u got it fixed!

I know what ya mean, timing crossed my mind, but I don't have a light to check it. The guys that fixed it, found the problem in less than an hour, I was impressed and I had them replace some other parts while they were in there, the idler bearings, hydraulic tensioner, and camshaft seals.

Glad you got it fixed man, despite the cost. Sorry about the misdirection on cleaning the MAF - 9/10 times that does the trick for the symptoms you described. I think what yours ending up being was more like the 1 in 1000.

cheers,
