Here's my semi-custom Droid 2 mount. I started with the Motorola mount and liked it alot other than being unable to attach the suction cup to anything besides the windshield (thief magnet) or the door below the HVAC controls. Plus, the suction cup mounting arm vibrated too much for my liking.
I wanted a permanent mount that did not force me to take my eyes too far from the road. I saw the ProClip mounts and liked the idea, but spending $30 on a little piece of plastic seemed rather stupid.
So I took a $5 piece of sheet steel from Lowe's, cut it, and bent it into a shape similar to the ProClip mount. Then I cut a hole in the center and mounted the cradle from the Motorola OEM mount into the hole. I put little crimps on the edges of the metal bracket and this allowed it to wedge into the cracks between the interior panels, much like the ProClip.
It is very secure. It blocks one of the vents a little bit and also blocks my view of the radio volume knob. I never use either of those things (windows open in the summer and radio controls on the steering wheel), so it works for me.
I ran a right-angle micro USB cord from my outlet under the console through the console and out the dashboard a few inches from the mount.
The dimples in the paint are from a previous attempt to paint it in hammertone finish, before deciding I wanted it flat black and covering it with Plasti-Dip.
