drop-in air filters?

so ive been looking at a K&N(have always had good luck with them) but was curious about other options. i DO NOT want a CAI, or anything along those lines, as i will be getting a snorkel at some point. my factory air filter was pretty dirty and clogged up with crap, ive pulled it and taken some of the mrs old nylons and put them over the inlet and the front side of the MAS with a rubber band for now but this isnt a permanent solution. what is out there and what have you guys used/liked? thanks

I always like AFE, they made the trd filter for 3rd gens. An AFE dry element filter is like $50 on amazon.

K&N guy myself. When i bought my 3rd gen, the filter was dirtier than i would ever let one get. So i went straight to the store and bought a K&N. I already have a cleaning and oiling kit for the one in my pickup.

I was always a K&N guy. But after more reading up I went with a dry filter this time. The oiled filters get your MAF and throttle body dirty, faster. Kind of defeats the purpose IMO.

i think he didnt mean to drop int in the coolant and so now its not "as it should be".

yeah i know about K&Ns and cleaning and oiling them(recharging them). both of my trucks have K&Ns and i used to have a K&N CAI on this runner. i know they are good but ive kinda been eyeing the new dry filters and might give them a shot.

I'm running the K&N myself, except I've always been a little worried about its size and shape. Even though it is made to OEM size specs, it's "floppiness" for the lack of a better word, allows gaps along the top and sides for dirty air to pass. The gaps are only about 1/4 wide, but any dirty air is not good. Does anyone else have this problem?

I literally dropped it into a 5gallon bucket of coolant. Sad day for me.

My K&n I bought on CL for $10 "freshly oiled" and oiled a lot. Made a mess of my MAF and tb.

I've been running a K&N drop-in air filter in the old '97 for almost 14 years now. No problems with oil getting on the MAF sensor, or dirt in the intake upstream from the filter.

I've used them on numerous motorcycles and cars since the 80's, with no issues at all.

Over-oiling a K&N does seem to be a common problem. So one of the dry filters might be preferable for that reason for some.
