Drop-in K&N filter question

First, I have used K&N in all my cars since I purchased my first car in 1986, my Supra. I know all the bad and evil things that are said about them and how they let is sooo much dirt you may as well dump sand in with you fresh oil. It's NOT true, I raced off road bikes for years, used K&N on all of them and had those engines apart every month, never did I see any scoring or wear related to grit in from the intake.

OK, all that being said, is the drop in K&N really that much thinner than the OEM air filter? It's like 1/3 the thickness.
Just want to know before I drop it in. All my other K&Ns were cone types that came with cold air intakes so I don't have anything to compare it to.
Thanks

I agree;I ran one filtering my turbo on my '93 Eclispe for 6 years and never had any issues with the turbo and as you know the vanes in a turbo have very minimal clearances.

The bad part comes from accidental over-oiling which can foul the MAF on a 4Runner.

My K&N drop-in is just a tad thinner than OEM and fits fine in the stock airbox.

I use K&Ns on my cars and motorcycles. The easy way to reoil them is to use the spray oil can. The stuff is pinky-red so you can see it. Go a little short with it on the first pass, let the filter sit for about 10 minutes to redistribute the oil in the gauze, then lightly hit the areas that aren't red (thin spots are easy to see).

Hey there I have one in my 03 SR5 V-8...I have used them in several cars and am very happy....I also drilled some holes in the front of the air box, (5/32 drill bit) maybe 12-15 a little more air and it sounds good too. CSM-H

i just make sure i never spray too much oil into the gauze. spray little by little and make sure its dry enough ( no oil run offs) before installing back on.

i wanna know where you drilled the holes, are you referring to the resonator box? do we have one on the 4th gen? reason i'm asking is i changed my filter to k&n (drop in) and i was trying to figure out if there is some kind of resonator box, inside the right fender? Where the intake pipe is connected? This is for the V6 4.0 by the way.. Don't know if that made sense sorry:biggrin2:
