My girlfriend wrecked her car last weekend (fender bender, she's OK) and is having it fixed at the moment. In the interim she has to rent a car to get back and forth to work (like I'm going to let her drive my car!!! It's not like we're married
) So she rented a car from Enterprise and they gave her a Pontiac G6 4-door auto.
I took it out for a spin last night and noticed a few things. The V6 has good low rpm torque and once the engine gets spinning actually has some decent power for a pushrod V6. The engine is suprisingly smooth for a GM derived V6. First gear seemed really tall and the car seems like it would really benefit from a 5 speed auto vs. the 4 speed because you can feel it wasting time trying to get up to usable engine rpm. Overall, it didn't feel as fast as my 4R but it was close.
All that being said, you can see why GM is going out of business when you drive their vehicles. This was a relatively new car with <10000 miles on it and when driving it just down to the store and back I could tell that the suspension damping was wrong as bigger than decent size bumps gave the suspension fits, the interor creaked and rattled a couple times and the brake pedal felt very mushy and disconnected. Maybe the coupe drives better, but overall I'm not real impressed. However, my girlfriend loves it....go figure.
On another Pontiac note...
I raced a '04 or '05 Grand Prix GTP Supercharged V6 (260HP 280TQ) the other day. I got him by about a half a car off the line (I know he was racing because I dusted him from the previous stop light and he caught up all fast by the next one) and held the lead until about 75 mph where he SLOWLY caught and passed me then the moron waved to me out his sunroof like he left me in the dust or something. I was just thinking to myself, "You just got taken to 75 by an SUV, ahahahaha!!" Anyways, I thought those things were supposed to be fast? I had no idea I'd hold on that long...
