drove with e-brake on!

Hi everyone:

I have a 1997 4Runner, and I just did a really stupid thing: I drove home (including highway!) with the emergency brake on! I'm so pissed at myself, I could kill something, and so upset I could cry. When I pulled into the garage, I noticed smoke and a "burnt rubber" smell. My question, and big concern is this: Did I damage the overall braking system? Are they connected in any way? Further, what should I do now in order to repair the damage, and what am I looking at cost-wise?

Any help from anybody would be appreciated.

I think that only your rear parking brake would be affected.

You probably pushed it to the limit, but brakes are tough and the vehicle will most likely be fine. The only problem could be a warped rotor but you would know that the next time out.

Do you have drum brakes? I wouldn't worry too much, if you have drums, maybe worned out shoes, wasted gas and possibly warped rotors. Drums use the same brake shoes for regular and parking brakes. If you have disc brakes, then you might've wore out the brakes inside the hub that are solely for parking and emergency brake use.

Worst case you cook the shoe and warp the drum. You'll know quite quickly if you did that. Otherwise.....if it feels and drives normal still, you got away with it. It shouldn't do anything strange or catasrophic to the vehicle.

I doubt you did any damage to the front rotors, they have nothing to do with the parking brake system. It might not be a bad idea to have the rear drum system checked. If the rear shoes are glazed from the heat, you may want to have the shoes replaced, and the drums resurfaced.
