Dual Battery Tray Options

I came across this today while researching dual battery setups. It looks like a similar solution to what Harper made for his setup which allowed for relocation of the power steering & A/C.

I don't have the space or equipment right now to fabricate a solution, so I'm looking for a quick win. Does anyone know of any other battery tray solutions that would work for the 5th Gen? Does Kodiak just sell their tray instead of the whole kit?

It looks like it will. If you look at the engine bay picture they have the engine setup is nearly identical, and the A/C + power steering fluid top-off attach at just about the exact same position as Harper laid-out in his build. I'm just curious if there are any cheaper or better options out there at this point.

A dual battery write-up at Pradopint.com is where I got the ideas to make mine.Prado 150's with the v6 do have the same engine compt. layout,new FJ's too.They didn't have them for sale yet so I made my own. Mine is very simular to ABR except I kept the AC line in the stock location,just trimmed the bracket.There is enough room there if using a Optima battery in that location because it's rounded right where the AC bracket ties in.

Thanks, Harper. I spent a bunch of time looking through dual battery write-ups last night, and yours was by far the most helpful. Looks like not very many people have done this yet... I didn't read the pradopoint article (didn't feel like registering for another account!), but I read one that referenced it ih8mud which was pretty helpful.

I went to Bud Built's website to look for the battery tray based on the recommendation in your original thread, and I was pretty disappointed to find out that he isn't making it yet!

Anyway, to clarify what you mentioned here: are you saying that an Optima will fit without re-arranging the power steering top-off/air conditioning units? It looks pretty tight in your setup.

Piece meal at this point. My wife has a specific medication that requires refrigeration so I am looking at a dedicated battery for a small fridge in addition to the more traditional auxiliary battery to power the other goodies. According the "the electrical" guy at West Marine, I can just add a second relay between the second and third battery, but I am still researching that.


But the battery tray is the first step and that one is just bolt-in which gives me one less thing to worry about.

On mine the AC line doesn't have to be moved over and re-clamped like on the ABR one. The AC line sits in it's stock location and the bracket bolts to my tray with a longer bolt and rubber spacer ,right in the corner.
The power steering res. still has to be relocated. Mine is simular except my side is taller and I made a cutout for the power steering bracket release. I fabbed another tray assembly out of .040" stainless for a prototype that I have yet to install that simplifies it .

Bud is super busy working on new projects right now.

Great. Thanks for the clarification. I'm thinking about getting the ABR tray, the National Luna DIY Kit, and an Optima Blue Top.
 
Hey guys, first post although been lurking for a while.

I just ordered the ABR tray. Emailed Derek at ABR, he says that the tray does indeed fit the 4runner and they have supplied a few to the USA. It was $230 shipped. I'll post some pics when I get it installed.
 
Installed

I purchased this tray Nov 4, 2010 and installed it without any issues. Below is an overhead shot of the tray installed.

I was just in Australia in February and the exchange rate was right about 1:1 (which is effing horrible because it used to be 1 USD : 1.80 AUD!)! How much did they charge you for shipping?

Shipping was 75$. The Australian dollar is worth just over 1 US dollar at the moment.

Still probably not worth it if shipping is anywhere near $50. I'm going to investigate some custom fabrication options via some friends and see if they're willing to make a few for people on the forum. I'll let everyone know what I find out.
