Dual Battery & Weight

Has anyone done dual battery setups where there is two group 25 batteries in the engine bay on the left side? I’m a little concerned about the extra weight on the left side. I believe the stock battery (5 gen) is 60 pounds and two group 25 batteries would run about 80. I would have to add the weight of the holder which I think would bring it to about 25 lbs additional. Is that 25-30 lbs on one side concerning for that particular spot in the 4Runner?

I’ve read that uneven weight distribution can be fixed with upgraded adjustable coilovers. But I’m not sure if 25-30 lbs is that big of a deal.

Granted that weight far forward has a bigger effect, but it seems there would be a greater variation in ride just from different passenger combinations. If you need something to balance the batteries, this might be an excuse to add onboard air on the passenger side.
 
The sheet metal of the inner fenders is barely up to the task of supporting a stock weight battery. Long term, if you drive on anything other than smooth pavement, you will be repairing cracks.
 
5 gallons less gas in the tank would offset that 25-30 lbs.
Gasoline weighs about 6 lbs/gal.

I've had a group 31 battery for years with no issues, the important thing is making sure you get quality battery mounts that keep the battery from moving. i suspect fender cracking issues are from the battery being able to move and rock if you try to re-use the plastic tray - when i did a poll on the topic no one had fender cracks with an upgraded battery mount.

THIS. I have stock battery sizes on both OEM locations and I have fender cracks all over. If I were to do it over again I would go for an in cab mounted Li-Ion aux battery.

This is a good option to consider.
I didn’t want the hassle of mounting an aux battery under the hood to run a fridge, and the electrical work involved. I don’t need a ton of external lights for camping, flashlights work fine for me. So I bought a Jackery 500 when there was a group buy deal last year.
It’s working great for me. It’s powered my fridge for 30 hours in hot weather and only got down to 15%. Light weight and portable, so I can move it into my house for some emergency power during power outages. Parts of CA lose power during wind storms or whenever a squirrel farts.

I had a group 31 Die Hard Platinum with a Pelfry cage - cracked the fender and the sheet metal under the left headlight, so I switched to an Odyssey group 25 (only 50 lbs) on the passenger side with a Shrockworks battery tray. I just welded the passenger fender a couple weeks ago.

The maker of the dual battery setup I’m looking at is telling me everything should be ok and the tray was changed to distribute more weight evenly to prevent cracking of the fender wall from the weight. Idk though, seems a bit too risky.

I have both, power packs are most certainly an option but it still takes up space and is more "hands-on" for use. Having an installed system under the hood is nice, its just out of the way and it works automatically, but could be considered overkill for occasional use.

If you are capable of installing a dual battery setup, you are probably capable of making you own battery pack as well.

Lot's of people are DIYing lithium ion battery packs. I made one that is pretty small using 18650 batteries, and able to run the fridge for 24 hours with charge.

i made my own portable dual battery setup. the one i have can be removed when not in use and i place in back.
