Dual Case Questions

How about the Atlas 4? It's got a reduction box and as far as my research goes I can't find anyone that has one installed in a 3rd gen. Expensive as hell but I'm seriously considering going with one. I like the idea of bullet proof and there cases have been in use for a very long time. I also think it'll be a really simple install given the fact it's already put together and just needs to be bolted up to the adapter plate. Thoughts?

If you want bullet proof, buy a Trail Worthy Fab Hero Trail Worthy Fab Three Speed Hero Case . I have 2 of their 3 speeds (one for my next buggy and one for the wife's Jeep project). It's $5K. Serious beef though. It's what all the Ultra4 guys are running now b/c Atlases can and do break.

Finding an adapter to your transmission may be a trick though...or you may have to have one made. I'd check with TWF.

Keep in mind the weak links in the build too....I'd always prefer to break an axle shaft over something else upstream in the driveline. That said, a 23 spline dual Marlin should hold up even with Tons and 37-40" tires if you don't drive like a moron.

If you're really gonna beat on it....a built 4Runner is going to weight 5500 lbs. minimum.....if that's the case, 32 spline Atlas would probably hold up, but a Hero 3 speed definitely would.

I'd look at other folks besides Tom Woods for shafts. I like Jesse at High Angle Driveline personally, but JE Reel is supposed to be good too.

I'd recommend Marlin over TG any day of the week, though it is more expensive and wait times are usually longer. Buy once, cry once.

Here is another VERY GOOD option for new shafts:

http://azdriveshaft.com/ Ask for Kyle.

The are not cheap, but come with a great warranty and the quality is top-notch!

Thanks for the input guys. I'll look into them.

Can you twin stick a multi-mode tcase?

No, but I bet you can make it work like twin sticks.
In the non-multi-mode push button cases, the 2/4 rail is operated by an actuator. The actuator looks much like the e-locker actuator. Anyway, I believe the only interlock "between the rails" is electronic- meaning there is no interlock pin that needs to be dropped out, but you would have to trick the electronics into letting you shift into low without telling the actuator to also shift into 4WD.
Again, not sure, but- I believe the multimode case could be tricked the same way.

That said, I just realized I'm only thinking of the '01/02 multimode; the '99/00 Limited multimode functions differently.

I am just going to tell him to stick to 1999-2000 SR5 models.

For the record my 97 feels very insulted.

So to cheer my rig up I ordered a crawlbox. lol

I will give it a kiss to make up when I see it. Unless it identifies as a male then it will be a bro hug. If it is non-binary, gender fluid, gender non-conforming I have no idea what is appropriate (sorry - was looking through my son's housing option selections and there are 10 selections for gender).

My truck is just a hunk of metal. It's always just called my rig. It has no gender. It has no feelings. I just needed to feel better about spending a metric shit ton of money on it the past few days. lol

Did you body lift before you put your shifters in? If yes, how mush? Rad Designs if I'm remembering things correctly. I'm thinking of a 1/2" BL lift before I install the crawl box so I have a little more play with the sticks. Still debating the twin vs triple thing. Being an auto I might have to get a little creative.

When I did them I had a 1". By the end I was wishing for a bigger body lift or smaller hands. I made running linkages much nicer. I had to get creative with the manual - can only imagine how much fun an auto would be.

Damn it. I was afraid you where gonna say yes. I guess I could live with bumper gaps. I'd still like to not use any and I'm pretty handy with an angle grinder but we'll see. It would also help me clear larger tires down the line if I did one though.

It might be coin toss time.

I am sure you could make it work without. If I had to do it again I would cut the tunnel and make an aluminum plate to cover it back up when I was done. I did a modified version by using a hole saw to make a hole right above the linkage mounts. If you don't have easy access to that area you will begin cursing with how many times you take apart and put back together everything to get the triple sticks to work how you want.

Personally, I like body lifts so I can limit the hacking on the body and run somewhat softer springs. When I went with 37s I upped it to a 2" and finally broke down and redid my back bumper. The front Savage was nice as its brackets are adjustable from 0-3" body lift.

That is a great idea. I just looked at a photo I have of the tunnel from when my rig was stripped for my sound deadening install. It looks like it would be pretty easy to just cut out a section of tunnel then weld it back in later. That would leave plenty of room to play.

Have you looked at Davez OffRoad sticks triples? They make a triple for Chaindrive to Top mount(listed as out of stock:frusty:). Unlike Rad Designs, Davez shifter and base plate design have the linkage connection facing down. That might just be the ticket. Anybody use them?

I wish I would have known of that option when I installed mine...
would have saved me a lot of fitment issues (I don't have a body lift)

Good luck with your decision.

Those look nice. That should help with clearance after you get it installed.

Exactly.

I don't have a body lift either. I'd rather not run one that's what make the Davez one so appealing.

I can't get them to answer the phone though. I've left two messages in the past week. Haven't heard a word. lol
